I recently left the military (Heavy vehicle tech) and started a new job (industrial diesel generator and compressor repair). My job is 60% on the road, 40% in the shop. We are expected to keep pretty much a duplicate set of tools in the shop and on the truck, with the exception being some of the more expensive test equipment, meters and power tools.

I jumped into this and bought most of my tools (with some aid for GJ'ers) over a couple weeks, right before starting the job. Currently, in the truck, I have Craftsman sockets, Craftsman Industrial wrenches, Williams ratchets, Northern Tool hex socket (Forget their house brand, but these are some of my most used tools) Williams screwdrivers (ratcheting and hard handled), Craftsman Pro pry bars. HF dead blows, HF Pro Impact sockets, Ridgid pipe wrenches(24, 36, 48), Bahco adjustables, and Channellock Pliers (multiple variety).

In my shop box (HF 44) the setup is pretty similar. I use my Bahco ratchets in the shop, some of my deepwell sockets are HF. I use the green SK screwdrivers in the shop and have Gearwrench ratcheting wrench master sets instead of the CM Industrial. Some of my shop pliers and adjustables are of a cheaper variety, sourced at sears clearance, HF etc.

Those are the tools I have duplicates of. The tools that get carried between include but are not limited to Milwaukee 18v (Drill, sawzall, circular, multiple impact wrenches) Fluke (87v, IR Thermometer, amp clamp) Torches, corded tools. In both the truck and shop, all sockets and wrenches go up to 1 1/2

I now need to put together a home set. Do I pluck cheaper stuff from my work box and replace with better? Do I just buy good tools for home and leave the other sets as they sit? I know theres a bit of HF in there, but in 1500 hours of pretty heavy use, I haven't broken anything yet.

I'm currently looking at Williams Supercombo wrenches, possibly some of their blow molded socket sets. I work on motorcycles daily at the house. I've been working out of my work truck but it's time to put some tools in the boxes I have sitting empty. What would you do?

i'm currently a field mechanic for a const eq dealer, and have been in this business for almost 30 years.

i seldom have to "borrow" any tools from my service truck to do anything in the garage.

at home i keep my "older, retired" air tools, they still work, but have been replaced with new stuff for work, or tools that i dont currently need.
hand tools are a mix of CM i bought new, "retired" work tools, HF, duralast, kobalt, "dads tools" and selected finds from garage sales, flea mkts, and pawn shops.

i check a couple select pawn shops once a month or so, and hit the $1 bulk tool bins for name brand deals. same with flea mkts and garage sales.
every friday the wife & SIL hit garage sales and resale stores, and i get the tool lowdown when i get home on friday.

it takes some time to "acuumulate" a 2nd set of tools, but not having to remember to put stuff back in my truck, or bring it home from the shop is worth it in the long run.

happy hunting

Do they let you take your service truck home? If so, you might not need to buy any home tools right away.

That's the deal, I do get to bring my service truck home, and I've been working out of that when at home for the last 6 months. I'm just in a good position now to start putting together another set. Just unsure if I want to buy more budget minded tools for home, higher end tools for home, or higher end tools for the shop or truck, bringing the tools the new ones replaced to my home box.

I built my home set by buying bigger and better for work. When I went on the road, the home box became the road set. In 4 years in the truck I have removed more stuff I never used then added. Also in general I borrow stuff from the truck then vise versa from the main box. It is easier to walk out to the truck to get something then be two hours away and go ****. Learn to do more with less. My truck tools are probably 1/3 if best the number of my shop tools, but I have everything to do my job. My home box is a hodge podge which is OK, I don't do anything in my home garage, but drink.
