What brand is this dehumidifier? I've got two Whirlpools and one other brand. I can see what they used for fan motors? I've picked mine up used, rather than pay retail. $15-$25 each is all I am willing to invest in them. :)

Go to an electric motor repair shop and show them what you got. They might be able to repair or give a new one.

Probably oilite bearings where that packing was a reservoir for the oil. Unfortunately it is very difficult to get the bearings to accept new oil but you can give it a try. Use a heavy weight oil (gear oil) for longer life, but expect to have to re-saturate the packing at least every few months--the motor's heat causes the oil to vaporize away quickly. I've had some luck using light bearing grease on these as well as oil.

In the end you really will want to replace the bearings or the motor.

The ball is the bearing/bushing that is supposed to be mounted in the end frame. Yours looks to be stuck to the shaft from lack of oil. If you can get it off the shaft w/o destroying it, and mounted back in the end frame, you MAY be able to fix it. It will take a lot of polishing on the shaft and inside bearing surfaces though.

Getting that bearing to accept new oil will be very difficult. You can soak them in oil for a week or so and they will absorb some oil. However hard to say what the life of the bearing will be, and as GreyOwl says: getting it off the shaft without damage to either the bearing or the shaft may be a difficult task: it is likely friction welded together!

... I put the packing back in place and dropped some light oil into it.
...
After about 20 minutes the motor started making noise again and soon stopped spinning.

Ok, now go back and re-read my posts. Don't use light oil, use at least 30 wt motor oil or even heavier perhaps. And soak that oilite bearing in oil for as long as possible. And use a film of grease on the shaft when reassembling, it will help.

It was probably better to just replace the motor. I replaced the motor on my dehumidifier about 15 years ago and it still works fine. The replacement has lasted longer than the original. Good luck with the new motor.
