Help Me Understand Garage Door Framing

I have (2) 9'x7' doors to frame, and one 4'x7' door where I am think of using a half garage door also.

Here is what I think I need to do:

• Frame the RO and add trim so that the opening is exactly 9'x7'. The weatherstripping/seal then sticks out a little to cover the edge of the door.
• Add 2x6 blocking around the whole door to mount the tracks and such to.

Here are my questions.....

• Does the door sit flush to the back of the drywall surface in the garage, and inside the 2x6 blocking? Does the 2x6 blocking need to be a little bigger than 9x7 I assume?
• How does the blocking differ for a high lift? I assume at each side it needs to run all the way up the wall, with no top piece at the top of the actual opening.

You will still need a horizontal 2x6 across the top of your door opening..Something to nail your stop to! Don't use blocking..Run 2x6 jambs from floor to ceiling, one in between those as a header, then one up the center for spring and operator. Like old football goal posts..

From what I am seeing when I do image searches, the door sits flush to the back edge of these 2x6s, correct? So they are set at the same dimensions as the RO, 9x7. Will the stops end up covering the 1 1/2" edge of the 2x6 that is essentially "outside" the door?

My door panels were ordered 2" wider than the RO, for a 1" overlap each side. In my case there will be a second weatherstipping installed that will cover the exposed 2x6 edge.

You might check to see....IIRC, there is a difference in size opening depending on whether you want commercial doors or residential doors. Seems like the commercial doors were full size and the residential were a little smaller. Someone here will surely know for sure.

My doors were framed right at 9' for the rough opening. The door is 9' wide. When you put the door seals around, it will cover each edge of the door by approx. 1/2" per side. I framed my according to the garage door manufacturer.

You'll have (2) 2x6's going up each side as mentioned above. One on each side going to the top, one beside each one going towards the center of the opening, and one going across the top.

This may explain it a little easier. You need to know how to place your studs though. This doesn't show it. But basically, your R.O. is the same size or less than your door size.

That 2nd drawing is a little deceiving. That is for a wood overlay door, you don't need track shims for a standard door installation..Screws directly to the 2x6..

Also for whoever is wondering. Usually the extra 2" is when mounting the tracks to a steel jamb as the tracks are reversed to point in towards the opening.

Awesome, thanks for the help guys, I have a better idea of how this works now.

One issue I have is that the high bay has a window above the door, centered right around the height that the torsion bar support would need to be mounted. I think I'll need to have a 2x6 cross the window at the right height for the bar to attach to.
