So I am trying to figure out if I should have gotten a free tool from the HD or if they gave me a discount instead !

Now I see that they have https://powertools.ridgid.com/promotions/ a free tool offer when you buy the 170.00 kit ..did I get the discount of 49.97 because I did not select the free tool ? ...or should I go back and claim a free tool/battery

You got the fan as your free tool. Seems pretty clear to me.
If you want something else, you'll probably have to return all of that, rebuy the kit with the tool you want and then get the fan separately
