Looking at a 49 piece SK set with SAE and metric, deep and short sockets, and a 59 piece GP (Grey Pneumatic) Duo socket set with SAE and metric, deep and short. What set would you guys buy? I love SK stuff, and I think its made well, but I have heard great things about GP, and the 59 piece is a heck of a deal, plus I could use them with my 3/8 impact. Thank You.

I personally don't like using impact sockets on a rat. Thicker walls mean less access. You can do it, and a lot of guys do, but it's just not my preference.
Between the two, I'd go SK

The SK 49 piece set. I don't care for GP because their sockets are flat on the drive end. No chamfer.

The SK socket set is really nice and one of the best affordable 3/8 sets i own one myself. I dont care for GP tools. It may be just me but i much rather see a nice new SK set thays actually worth something vs some generic GP impact sockets. Be careful not to use your sk sockets with an impact wrench in a pinch as they will not warranty them when they see the drive end has been used with an impact wrench.

Looks nice but depends on where they're made and what they're made of. They're probably not crmo so you might have to be careful with them if you use them on an impact.
Lot's of variables including what you're paying.
I have a the 3/8 set that nicksnothereman linked to. I bought it elsewhere for about 50 bucks cheaper though.
I am pretty sure they are CrMo sockets.
They are thin wall sockets, more similar to a chrome socket wall thickenss than a traditional impact socket. I like the fact that I don't have to go buy a special set of thin wall impacts to access tight fasteners. I have had zero issue with lack of a drive end chamfer, socket goes right on the ratchet or impact.
The ratchet in the set is just OK. It feels better than the current RP Craftsman though. Not sure I like the wobble extensions, neat idea but I don't trust them with an impact.
The gripe I have is that it seems the smaller size deep well sockets are a little shorter than I like. They work just fine, but they are not the same full body length as the larger sockets.
My bottom line:
If you need thin wall impacts or only need/want one set of sockets, I would look at the GP Duo Sockets. If not, then go with the SKs for the chromes and get a good set of impacts later.

I live in a small town with a couple of pawn shops and between the two there are tons (literally) of used tools. Looking through those tools the only sockets I notice that are split are very cheap ones and SK ones. I haven't seen a split Craftsman in the boxes. If it was me I would put together a set of used Craftsman if I had the time. I'm not anti-SK, but just telling you what I've seen. And obviously those split SKs may not be like current SKs, with all the ownership changes.

I always buy higher end hand sockets and cheaper impacts. Hand sockets are Proto, Blackhawk, and Williams.
I have a few Proto impacts, but I tend to buy Tekton impacts. They are excellent quality for what they cost, they have a rep that is active here, and if you bust one you just call them and you have a new one in 48 hours. Best customer service on the planet. No questions asked.

I called GP and was told those DUO sets are fully chrome molybdenum, for what it's worth.

Everybody on GJ that has the DUO set loves them. Impact ready but chrome sized.....they're on my wishlist.
