Help Me With Replacing Craftsman RP Ratchets

Definitely, all ratchets should be lubed. I have some that I did not lube and some that I did and there is a difference.

Matco ratchets a shorter in height but wider in width compared to snapon. Craftsman premium ratchets look very similar if you have seen those. So depending on the situation one may work better than another. I have thinner ratchets for those situations with height.

Some people prefer the matco flex lock because the lock on the snapon can get hit and cause the ratchet to lock when you don't want it to.

The bahco brand is cheaper but do have different handles. Matco stuff is rebranded and can also be bought under other names bi the Matco branded stuff seems to be the best versions of those types of tools.

You might want to check out Mac and Cornwell, Armstrong, wright, blue point, proto. There is a reason certain types are more popular than others. Then there is also a factoring of price too.

I'd get the Armstrong MAXX locking flex head ratchets. Or are you set on Snap On? You can get the Armstrong for pretty good prices at AAP if you use coupons.

I'd actually skip the snap on 1/4 drive ratchet. The 72T models just aren't as good as the 80 tooth 3/8 and 1/2 drive models. I'd get the armstrong MAXX or SK in 1/4 drive, and the snap on in 3/8 and 1/2. Sk's design is old, but I still think it's the best 1/4 drive out there. 60T, extremely smooth, and very strong.

3/4 I'd go for SK again. The 72T round head ratchet is a beast from SK.

If I had it all to do over again, I'd buy:

1/4 Drive:
Carlyle 72 Tooth Standard Length
Snap On TLL72
Carlyle 100 Tooth Roto-Head
Armstrong MAXX Locking Flex-Head
Harbor Freight Dual-Head (1/4-3/8) Long-Handled Ratchet

That's exactly it. Cheapest from Advance Auto with coupon. I also have the 1/4". I'm just delaying getting the other two. I plan on putting these in my service cart:

1/4"
Armstrong MAXX Locking Flex
Bahco 6950
Undecided on a long handle-wish HF would make one

I got my 1/4" Armstrong MAXX Locking Flex-Head in the mail today - very nice! Thanks for all the input.

I would go so far as to recommend HF swivel head ratchets for stubby, they are awesome ratchets and you can't beat the price!

Ok, they weren't on the HF site, but I found one in each size (1/4, 3/8, 1/2) on eBay for a good price.

Thanks,

Scott

I picked up a pair of SK thumb wheel (aka palm?) ratchets - one 1/4" and one 3/8". Any need for a 1/2" thumb wheel ratchet?

Made a fair amount of progress. Picked up about a dozen Pittsburgh Pro ratchets; I would prefer Snap On, but it's hard to beat a dozen ratchets for what one Snap-On would cost. And I think the Pittsburgh Professional stuff is pretty good quality.

Still have several holes to fill; details below. Next purchase will be 1/2" flex head with 18" or 24" handle. Anyone know who has the best bang for the buck?

Current List:

1/4"
Standard: Craftsman RP (have)
6" Locking Flex: Armstrong MAXX Locking Flex 10-994 (have)
Long Locking Flex with Handle: ?????
Stubby Roto/Swivel Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Regular Roto/Swivel Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Stubby Flex Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Stubby Non-Flex: ????
Composite: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Thumb Wheel: SK (ordered)

3/8"
Standard: Craftsman RP (have)
12" Flex with Handle: Snap On FHLF80 (have)
Stubby Roto/Swivel Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Regular Roto/Swivel Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Stubby Flex: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Stubby Non-Flex: Kobalt????
Thumb Wheel: SK (ordered)
Composite: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
3/8" ratchet in 1/4" Body: ?????

1/2"
Standard: Craftsman RP (have)
Stubby Roto/Swivel Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Standard Roto/Swivel Head: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Composite: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)
Long (18"?) Locking Flex with Handle: Armstrong 12-994????
Very Long (24") Locking Flex with Handle: SHLF80A????
Stubby Flex: Pittsburgh Pro (ordered)

bulletpruf,

Sounds like you're building up quite a collection, and trying to cover all the bases. There's nothing wrong with that, many people who think about these things tend to do the same thing. However, speaking as someone who's "been there, done that", I do have a few suggestions.

#1 - In my ratchet universe, the roto-head (swivel) reigns supreme. It won't do everything, but it does most things - and does them very well. My concern with your roto lineup is that you are choosing the worst of the rotos (Harbor Freight) to fill this important category of ratchets. The HF rotos have really terrible backdrag, are annoyingly loud, and can't be disassembled for cleaning and lube. In a stubby roto, HF is about the only choice - but for a normal length I would suggest that you at LEAST step up to Kobalt or Husky quality, and definitely shoot for Carlyle or Snap On quality if you can afford it. I am worried that if you only have HF rotos to mess with, you won't end up liking them or using them much, and end up not enjoying all the benefit of these really excellent ratchets.

#2 - I've bought a lot of ratchets that have "overlap" in functionality. This is really money wasted, although I've learned a lot from it and I can always recoup some of the cost by selling extras. I would suggest this as a strategy to avoid this:

Think of what each size brings to the table, and select ratchets accordingly.

1/4 is about finesse and working in cramped or inaccessible areas for the most part... and small fasteners that are removed and installed rapidly. The Roto ratchet really shines in 1/4 drive - I'd pick up a good quality standard handle length roto FIRST for this drive size. I would then choose a long handled like the TLL72 or equivalent for reach, a stubby of some sort for super cramped spaces, and finally something like the Armstrong MAXX for angled work where you need a stable socket that won't flop around.

3/8 is the general-use workhorse. For anything involving somewhat "normal" sized fasteners, you will use 3/8 drive the most. Go nuts with it - buy every conceivable style you find a use for. I'd start with a quality roto, an Armstrong locking flex, a long handled, and a fixed and flexing stubby. Add as needed. I don't really consider any of my 3/8 ratchets as "extras" or unnecessary... they've all come in handy in some situation or other. It's up to you to decide, based on the work you do, which ratchets will be the MOST useful and obtain them first.

1/2 is about power. I don't own or want a roto in 1/2. I don't want short ratchets in 1/2. Ideally, a long handled fixed ratchet, a long breaker bar, and an Armstrong MAXX locking flex is all I need or want in 1/2, but I've piled up a bunch of other 1/2 stuff over the years that I never end up using. Such is life.

#3 - Non-locking flex heads and roto-ratchets overlap a LOT. No real sense owning a bunch of both in the same handle lengths - decide which style you like best for a given length and drive size, then obtain other needed ratchets instead of redundancies.

In any case, buy what you want... just give it some thought and read as much as you can here. There are some really great knowlegeable folks on this forum!

Happy ratcheting! :)

BM -

Thanks for the detailed comments.

Some of the overlap is simply a function of price -- kind of tough to pass up some of the Pittsburgh Pro ratchets for the $$$. If they sit in my box collecting dust, that's fine. Better than a $200 ratchet collecting dust. I also hate it when you spend 2 hours on a 5 minute job because you can't get at a nut or bolt, so I'm ok with overlap if it might save me some time and frustration down the road.

I hear what you're saying on the quality swivel/roto ratchets. Good points. Sounds like I have an excuse to buy a few more ratchets!

I actually went the other way.

I bought a SnapOn flex head dual 80 in 3/8 on eBay for a decent price. Decided I wanted the standard ratchets in 1/4 and 3/8 but didnt want to spend SnapOn $$.....so I bought the Bahcos instead. Same ratchet - different handle material.

I honestly use the flex head the most - very versatile ratchet.

More progress -

Ordered the Wright 3430, Titan 11072 (24" 1/2" drive flex - Mac sells a rebranded one), and Williams S70 thumb ratchet.

You're not kidding on the HF roto-head ratchets! Two arrived today; very noisy and backdrag was very noticeable, too.

Nice collection!

Yeah, a few weeks ago I had 3 or 4 ratchets, all the same brand. Now I have about 30. About 7 different brands.

Wife is watching me type this. Oops.

She said, "why do you have so many dang ratchets?"

My reply, "why do you have 30 pairs of shoes?"

At least she doesn't know how much they cost...

Dk what you wife buys for shoes but I know my wife's boot collection is worth way more than my ratchets. I don't have a ton of ratchets though. I can only operate one ratchet at a time and there's only a few styles I like to use.

Same argument that I use on my lovely wife -- why do you have 30 pairs of shoes when you can only wear one pair at a time?

Got plenty of ratchets. Don't have the urge to ever add another. In my main box right now this is what you will find.

1/4
SK classic round head (my fave 1/4 ratchet)
No name stubby flex head (think I have used once)
SK Thumbwheel. (rarely used)
No name breaker bar. (use this often)
Think I may have a Craftsman thinline I never use.
Craftsman RHFT. Like it in 1/4 and sometimes use it when I want a longer handle than the sk.

3/8
SK small round head made by Facom I think. (use frequently)
Craftsman RP (Good basic ratchet I use when one of the others I prefer is not available)
Williams Fine Tooth. (I like it, but just don't reach for it much these days)
Stanley pear head QR from the 90's. (Think I like this one the best, better than the new ones. Quick release is very well liked by me above 1/4" drive)
SK flex head with bent handle. (almost never use)
Mac RHFT long flex head. (Use almost as much as the Stanley)
Stanley Rotator. (Gimicky, but handy in rare cases. Earned a spot in the box)
Napa stubby flex head. (use it pretty often..my #3 I would say)
Craftsman 3/8 breaker bar. (rarely used)

1/2
Stanley/Husky round head QR. (nothing fancy or respected here, but has done right by me for 20 years)
Craftsman xtra long handle flex head. (used quite often)
Stubby Titan. (almost never used)
Wright breaker bar. (used often)

3/4
Proto classic pear head with matching breaker bar.

What you don't find in my main box may be more interesting. I have a big box of ratchets that I have rejected and one day will sell or give to my kids. I already sold maybe 30 over the years here, but they keep piling up as I get a deal on one. Looking at the box the other day I saw Plenty of SO (six as of this moment). Pittsburg Rotohead (plastic handle spins off when torquing like screwdriver so rejected) Wrights, Craftsmans of all flavors, SK classics, Protos, Cornwells, Blackhawk and many others. Once you get above around $25 retail, you will not find much quality difference IMHO. Just features and designs you like better. That's not to say you wont find dogs @ $30 but you will find high quality ones a plenty. Features I really like are knurled handles, decent gear counts, smallish heads, quick release and that all really comes into play with 3/8. 1/4 tends to play out that you need a basic small ratchet 90% of the time and 1/2 you want a longish handle for leverage..simple needs so I would not invest much in those sizes for the average user.

Damn, that's a list of ratchets!

In my main box in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" I have Dual 80's in standard, long, and flex heads, SK round heads, and clicker torque wrenches from Proto and Cornwell. I also have a 3/8" Snappy Roto and a Dual 80 1/4" bit driver. In 3/4" drive I only have a standard Wright ratchet.

I'm looking for a stubby ratchet in 3/8" (probably another Dual 80) and a 1/4" Roto (has to be a Snappy).

Not interested in stubby flex ratchets in any size, composite ratchets, thumbwheels, or 1/2" drive Roto.

Different strokes for different folks!

Fellas -

What about rebuilding the Craftsman ratchets that I have? Does anyone make another mechanism that you can install?

Thanks,

Scott

I wish!!! I've looked and found nothing. Craftsman RP ratchet handles handles are tough as ****, ugly as sin, cheap as dirt, and you can find them everywhere. It would be awesome if someone designed updated ratchet guts for those RP ratchets. Something with less slop, less backdrag, and more teeth. It wouldn't have to be super fine, but something at least better than 36. 45 or 60 would be great.

I don't expect to ever see it happen, but man, would that be awesome...

Forgot to list my torque wrenches.

Have a 1/4" beam style inch/lbs torque wrench.

Craftsman clicker 3/8".

Harbor Freight 1/2" clicker.

The Carlyle 1/4 and 3/8 roto heads arrived yesterday - very nice! Thanks, BuckGnarly!

Also picked up the two ingredients for the Garage Journal Special "Red Paste of Love" to lube the ratchets.

A few more updates...

Disassembled my Craftsman RP ratchets for a clean and lube with the red paste mix. They're quieter, perhaps a little smoother, but did not appear to make much of a difference.

Some of the new ratchets seem to be dry, so I'll work on these next.

I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet...but....when taking apart a new to you type of ratchet..................disassemble it over a box. The first time a tiny ball flies out and lands in the box........you'll thank me.
