Hi, I'm new to this forum and the owner of a recently purchased Cincinnati Toolmaster verticle mill. It has a slotting (shaper) attachment as well. I also have 3 lathes and two other mills and have owned machine tools all my life. I have also downloaded the user manual. I believe this mill has a 1D head, as it is 2HP variable speed unit. I also think this head has a NMTB 40 quill, but I have not been able to figure out how to remove the Quick Change collet holder now in the quill. This collet holder uses the Cincinnati Series C Toolmaster collets, which I do not have and are way too expensive and hard to find. The head has spindle lock levers on the top that do not appear to lock anything. So before I dissassemble the head please, if anyone knows how this to remove the holder and get to the spindle taper and drawbar, please let me know?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve,
Welcome to the forum. Your best bet might be to do a google search and click on the links to the PracticalMachinist.

I happened to be doing some browsing today regarding the Cincinnati ToolMaster and found some helpful info.

Depending on your vintage of Cinci, it sounds like there may or may not be a drawbar to remove the collets. A couple of guys mentioned that there is a spindle lock and then the collet is removed by a thin wrench on the collet.

best of luck!

There is a sliding push-pull knob on the 1D head just above the spindle on/off switch. This is the spindle drawbar lock. Push this in while manually turning the spindle (have the spindle in neutral) and you can feel it drop into a detent position on the spindle/drawbar.

Use the Cincinnati provided open-end wrench on the spindle flange just above the toolholder and loosen two turns.

Now, according to Cincinnati, you push upwards on the quill feed handle and the toolholder unseats but is retained by the drawbar so it doesn't fall onto the table.

That does not work on my Toolmaster!

I ensure that the spindle is fully retracted and the drawbar extends out of the top of the head a bit. Verify that the spindle/quill is clamped into the head! I whack the end of the drawbar with the flat face of the wrench once or twice and the toolholder unseats from the taper. I then unscrew the toolholder from the drawbar threads.

To install a toolholder into the spindle, I thread the toolholder onto the drawbar threads until the spindle keys/toolholder keyways are aligned, then I use the wrench on the spindle flange to tighten the final 2-3 turns while aligning the keys/keyways.

Thanks guys. I struggled with this for some time, but you are correct. I figured this out the hard way. I locked the spindle and started unscrewing the spindle, but nothing appeared to happening, but after a few turns the quill handle started to rotate. This confused me because I had quill clamp locked. I then used a plastic mallet and whacked the collet holder which popped the collet adapter loose from the quill taper. After removing the adapter all became obvious and yes, popping the quill feed handle does release the taper, If the tool hasn't been installed for years, as this one was.
Thanks for your help.

Although this machine is in excellent shape, it does have a couple of electrical faults. I have queried over in PM a source for schematics as there are none on the mill door and none in the manuals downloaded from scribd.com. So I need some help in that department as well. Do any of you know if Milicron still is a source for spares?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve, I have looked at my Toolmaster service manual and parts list catalog and they have no electrical information in it. It shows everthing else you would want to know as its about 90 pages long. If I can be of any help let me know.

Perhaps some help may be forthcoming. I contacted a firm called Cincinnati Machines LLC. It appears this is a remnant of the old company. They claim to carry used spares, accessories and many of the old parts drawings including manuals and wiring schematics.

I have sent an email to their website and received a reply. The contact's name is Duke Fredricks. He stated that he could put a solution together and wanted to know the machine serial number to select the correct schematic. I did and I am waiting. I'll keep you posted. His email is [email protected].

i refurbished 2 of those mills several years ago. you are correct about the collet system . the cinny collets were out of this world pricey. i believe i bought some from hardinge for it. i used a martin pump type wrench for the collets. johnny
