Help on my adjustable stool

I picked up a reasonably nice stool off CL a weekend or so ago. It's supposed to be height adjustable, but it's old school, which means it uses a large screw that locks into a key (slot) on the seat post. I need to increase the height a bit but I can't get the screw to loosen. I tried soaking in some WD-40 and also tried to apply a bit of heat with a propane torch, but I may not be doing it right.

Can anyone offer some tips?

Thanks in advance.

Don't have any pics at the moment but plan to remedy that in a bit.

Probably a dumb question, but are you applying heat to the screw itself or the post? I would think that heating the screw directly would exaggerate your problem

Screw or setscrew? Either one, take either a screwdriver, preferably an old one, or cut off the "L" portion of an Allen wrench if it's a setscrew, and hit the screw a few times to loosen it using the screwdriver or hex wrench as a punch. By doing so it should bust the rust loose.

WD40 wont do anything for this. Use PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench. If its really bad apply the liquid wrench every day for a week.

I have pb and will try. It doesn't look corroded so I'm not sure why it won't budge.

Got it. Blasted with PB and put a pipe wrench on the handle (after wrapping with a shop rag). Barely pushed the pipe wrench and it started turning. Thanks for the tips. Now the issue is that it might not be tall enough! I got it set to the right height but it feels a bit loose and tippy. Oh well.
