I'm not sure what you mean by "R8 adjustable boring bars". Boring bars are normally used in a boring head for a mill. If that's what you are after Borite boring bars for use with boring heads are good.

If you have a 3" boring head Borite also makes a 5/8" shank with 6 bars in a set.

I just have a Shars set but I don't use them much. Have been fine for my needs.

I have this exact set, but unfortunately haven't had a chance to use them yet. My initial impression is they look nice for the money. I bought them to use with an R8 shanked Criterion boring head.

Borite makes good stuff. I've been meaning to buy a set, made in USA & priced well. The inserts look generic but they are consumables, it's the bars that matter.

I've been meaning to buy a set but my current bars have been working fine for me. I have this set by Shars, they used to be under $40 shipped on ebay. The inserts it came with are junk but I've replaced them as needed. I'm also using them in a Criterion.

Indexable

The R8 part is what really confused me. Boring heads don't have to be R8 if your spindle is R8. You are using a boring head right? Just making sure you aren't trying to use boring bars in R8 collets cause you can't. Well you could if you wanted to make oblong holes. :)

I assume he is looking for a boring head in R8 and boring bars to go with it.

Check out latheinserts.com. Curtis has some nice 1/2" diameter indexable boring bars and positive rake inserts to go with them for cutting steel or aluminum. They work in a minimum 5/8" hole. Since I got mine, I haven't used any brazed carbide bars. The positive rake geometry of the inserts work really well with low HP, and aren't as prone to chatter on smaller machines.

+1 on Graham08‘s post, I have several of Curtis‘s 1/2" bars cut to different lengths I use in a APT boring head. MUCH less flex than the brazed set which I keep for delicate jobs & really small I.d. jobs

I bit the bullet and bought a 2" Criterion head and shank. No complaints here. I have not used any of the cheap copies to know if there really is a difference.

This is what im looking for.

Even that is like asking what car should I buy. People can throw suggestions at you all day, but without something to arrange them by it is just noise.

What do you want to make? What is your budget? What precision do you desire? All of those things are kind of tied together.

I like Seco, but I'm guessing by the fact you are asking for suggestions on GJ you don't need a $2000 boring head.

I really like Narex (but that's the boring head). Its ~20 years old at this point but seemed very good. Built in Czech-Republic (probably calling it wrong name).

I don't have indexable inserts for it. I think you want a high positive with smallest corner radius. No sense flexing the setup with cutting forces.

I get that stuff from Shars, Travers, Penn Tool Co. I used to get a lot of stuff from Enco, but MSC bought them and the prices went up, way up.
