Hello.

I have been looking for a used box as an auto tech for awhile. I have no idea how to price these things and I am in need of help. The current box I am looking at is a krl722bpc. The seller claims it was purchased in 2015. Serial number 123w.

Asking price is 2500. Is this a fair price? What would you offer? Thanks.

I'd say it's near the higher-end of what I'd consider a fair price.

Seller has priced it at less than 50% of retail pricing, so he's already doing better than 95% of the whack-jobs trying to sell their box.

If it were in pristine shape, local to me, and I had the cash ready to go, I'd offer $2000 cash, and see where the negotiation goes.

I think you were generous with your $2250 offer. Just because the first guy isn't a shrewd negotiator and paid too much for something doesn't mean everyone down the line has to as well. If you're willing to spend that much, I'd definitely go with a used tool truck box. If you have a guy, let him know you're looking, they usually have used boxes coming and going. I wouldn't spend $2k on a $500 Chinese box either.

I have no problems using a stuctlytoolbox brand box. I also do not believe either of them are worth the price. Since cost is similar to a used tool truck brand i figured it would be best to go that route even if i dont plan to sell it.

I just need a tool box that will hold up to my abuse.

around here 722's you can get for around 2k. I saw a krl1022 and ktl1022 for 2700-2900. the 722 is a shallow 24" box compared to the 7022 and 1022 at 30" so the 722's are cheaper used even though they are all the 54-55" class boxes

krl722 generally goes quite cheap new as smaller box and full retail only in the 6K .
I wouldn't want pay more than 1500 to 1800 used and only 1800 if super tidy and local area easy viewing and I need something fast .
I would perhaps look for matco mb7525 or mb7535 used as good solid boxes and generally more bargain priced over krl snapon . Unfortunately most advertised used snapon boxes are overpriced, best buys and boxes tend be word of mouth .
Good used buys cost you nothing as sell on for same money you put into it and if use it for decades you do well too .

The problem with strictlytoolboxes, is the support when you damage a drawer or something. You stuck waiting until they get their next shipment from overseas. I was going to place an order with them but wanted a different drawer and it was going to take 6 months for the drawer to show up. Snap On would have my drawer in 3 weeks.

And yes resale value is something to consider in all investments, which tooling is. My advice is to keep saving up money and keep an eye out for a killer deal and grab it, in my area big boxes sell for a steep discount because no one has that kind of cash on hand.

If it helps any, I paid $2500 for my KRL722 new off the truck about 8 years ago and sold it last year for $1600. Used it to get a box off strictly tool boxes and it's much larger and feels almost the same.

Was that with a trade in? It's rare to read about someone getting new box without a trade-in.

The only time I asked about a box, my SO dealer started at MSRP and then took off the trade-in and rebates. I forgot which KRL it was for. Then I saw an Epiq 68" on CL for $4k which I thought was a better deal than what he offered, but I'm not really sure what's a good deal on an Epiq in Northern California.

It was not with a trade in. It was a scratch and dent though. Which I should have mentioned. It had a 6inch gash through the paint that lightly dented it. He touched it up but still sold it as "scratch and dent." My snapon guy is pretty good. Our shop is huge and I think he wants to keep customers so he cuts some "deals."
An epiq for $4K is pretty good.

4k for an epiq not that good, 3k more realistic used price . Epiq get totally overpriced and most could get better trade in deal or clearance/damaged box for that money .

People around here are asking nearly $4000.00 for a Classic 96. No way you’d ever see an Epiq for that price.

Considering people can buy new for 6k range, 4k not that great. I've had 3 epiqs in recent years, a 60" & 2 68", one 68" was rough heavy scrapes/marks and needed front and side refinishing and all drawer fronts, paid 2k for it, other 68" just needed usual good clean and few bad drawer liners replaced and paid 3,200 . Some of the craiglist prices are ridiculous, I've bought and sold used boxes for 3 decades and current used prices via likes of eBay and craigslist on lot of truck boxes are ridiculous compared to actual out the truck new pricing and the actual condition .

Around here $3-4k would buy a double bank KRL (or similar) at most. 4K for an epiq would be considered a steal.

A couple years ago the Matco guy took a epiq in on trade (68" IIRC), priced at $8k, sold it as well. There may have been a box traded in for that as well but more then likely the after trade price would be $6k or over.

Boils down to what the local market will or wont support, location is the big variable.

$1400 for a used 40"x20" box that retails new for under $2200 doesn't sound like any kind of a deal, but maybe there's less margin on the cheaper boxes.
