im in diesel school right now and my ol husky box is gettin pretty full.. i found a snap on harley davidson box in great condition. its the double bay with the work center and the above that storage. my question is what is it "worth" i've figured out quick that tools really hold there value. i can get a good discount from matco (1,500 for a double bay roll cab) and i can get this for a little more thanks

I don't like toolboxes with other names on them like Harley Davidson or Dale Earnhardt - I like plain toolboxes with just the manufacurer's logo on them.

If you're a student in tech school, I'd recommend holding off on buying a box until after your first paycheck, or when you feel like you're secure with the job.

model number.........width depth........it's probably worth 2k but i can't tell from the pic.

you may consider adding a side cabinet and spending the 2K in tools though

i would just add on but my husky box is a top box no rolling.... also it doesnt lock so its basically just slide out shelves. i gotta chain wrapped around it with a master lock.. the thing i like about this hd snap on box is it has a hutch. and i figure i can get more box for the same money as a matco without anything but the bottom box

the harley toolboxes are "collective" as i think but some of techs do own the collective toolboxes like dale or Dale jr toolboxes at work. i like "collective" toolboxes as it is look good and neat but being automotive technician which i am rather to own either black or red colors... i wear and usage my toolboxes so i dont want dent or scratches the "collective toolboxes" that why i own older Models as KRL1203 and KRL1003 that already wear out and i love it...

see my picture what i own older snap on boxes in older dealership service dept.

i paid both for less than 2 grands...

i think you might want wait and see what other boxes go for sale... you might get bigger toolboxes for same price or not.... it is my opinion...

if you really like that harley toolboxes then it is your decide... but problem is Diesel mechanic always have heavier tools and might bigger tools which make you need bigger boxes???

I wouldnt pay extra for a box with a harley or a race car driver on it. The hutch is neat.. but I dont think it'll be good for rolling around. If it's the harley box or the matco.. I'd research them well.. compare sizes(width and depth), drawer sizes(useful sizes for you), etc.. and see which fits best for you.

I'm sure it is the actual box that will hold value not a name or brand on the box. Brand meaning harley.

Are you saying you can GET the box for $1500, or are you saying you can get $1500 taken off the list price of a new Matco box?

i can get a MATCO double bay for 1500 new through there student program.. but in my little mind i can pay 500 more for a hutch and top storage if i go with the snap on harley box

I would look for a box on craigs list. I can not tell from the picture but I would want one that had the wide top drawer on the roll cab for my most used items, sockets and ratchets. Also remember that the tool box needs to be wide enough to hold certain tools. I have a 3/4 drive breaker bar that is too long to fit in any of my toolbox drawers. It sits on a shelf. One can never have too much storage space. I would look for a good used base rollcab and build up. If the box you are talking about is that base then I would try and deal. I do like the color of the box and you can not go wrong with a Snap on box. The box will hold its value for trade in at a later time if needed.

I suggest looking for a better deal and not being so worried about collectible boxes which I really cant see being a important consideration. Times are hard right now and a lot of techs are being laid off and looking at other fields so good deals are plentiful for larger boxes at a lesser price. I also suggest getting as many tools as you can afford while still getting 50% off from matco, snap-on, fastenal for craftsman, mac, and s&k.

The snap-on system is not as convenient as what matco offers but no you don't have to order packages you just have to meet the minimum purchase amount per order which when I was in school was $300 IIRC.

I think if you are having that much storage problems then buy the box you can get a discount on. When I was in school we were offered some stupid cheap deals from SO, I never took advantage of the 55% off selected boxes because I really didn't have the extra cash and I needed tools first... It's a catch 22 really...

Talking from personal experience I don't think you should pass up the deal on a discounted new box... even if a few drawers are empty for a while you'll have a nice box with room for expansion.

Take advantage of the deals while you can.. if not you might end up regretting it

That Matco box lists for $3915. I've never bought anything from a Matco truck. If $3915 is what one would actually have to pay, the $1500 student price seems like a hell of a deal. Is the Snap on box like new and as big? If so, then the hutch may be usefull and all things being equal, get what you like best. Otherwise I think the amount of storage availabe in the box is the most important consideration, along with price. While there are many boxes on craigslist 'a box in the hand is worth two in the bush'--or something like that! good luck

i dont guess i should be telling off prices then

It's no big secret that you get the stuff cheaper than us. The only problem is when you graduate & step onto a truck. Something that you prices a few months earlier will now cost you more. Many times the student ends up thinking that we're ripping you off. My advice, buy what you can afford now.

I was going to say the opposite - don't be ina hurry to spend your money. Good deals on boxes happen all the time - just sift through the archives on this board and read about some of the boxes that people have bought in the last three years alone!

Then again, Dave makes a good point. You have a unique opportunity right now. Do what you can afford... but once you're in debt, it's all over. Good luck!

You might also check with Mac and Snap On. They both have a Student Excellence Program designed to sell you there stuff before you ever graduate. Once you graduate, you dont qualify for their programs. In both cases, you get about 50% off their regular price. 6 Months ago I was looking at a Classic 78 for about 2000 and a Classic 96 for under 3000. Ask your instructor who their Industrial Rep is and he should be able to hook you up.

Ebay is also great for tool boxes if you can pick them up. I bought a Macsimizer 56 inch top and bottom for 2100 dollars(MB1850 & MB1855). That box costs over 11000 new. I had to drive 4 hours to pick it up. The paint on it was kind of messed up so I took it to a powder coater who powder coated it for me for 400. So I have 2500 in an 11000 dollar tool box. You wont beat that deal anywhere.

Good Luck
Pat

My thought is... as Dave said.. if you've got the $$ to burn now (cash not credit) and know you already have a job coming out of school go for it. However keep in mind the way the industry is going for alot of folks right now and consider you'll just be making a guarantee vs. flat rate for awhile once you come out. Even with schooling, etc you will probably spend your first 6-12+ months changing oil, etc... Yeah that HD box is slick.. its got alot of storage... but at the price I'd pass. You could probably find the same box in a non HD badging for $1500ish. However again.. if you have the $$ to blow.. go for it.
