Conduit provides just a case ground for 240v appliances typically. Like motors, water heaters, compressors, etc. It is wise to run a separate ground conductor for safety. But I'm not gonna argue over the internet. Run your electric how ever you want.
The whole grounding system is required be Code to be bonded one to another.
In reality, properly installed EMT provides a better grounding path, with less impedance, than a copper conductor in PVC.
There's nothing wrong with running a ground in EMT, but it isn't required. I don't think that even the Chicago City Code, with all it's ridiculous requirements, require it.
