My little shop is an unheated tool shed. The only thing I have a rust issue with is my Wilde made pry bars. Any secret treatments? They hang out in a Sunex pry bar rack on the side of my tool chest.

An oily rag?

I have a fan blowing in my unheated garage almost year round. Keeping the air moving seems to help with rust. Doesn't completely prevent it, but the condensation of a thin film that can promote corrosion seems to be lessened.

I bought a trigger spray of LPS3 from Zoro. I wipe that on anything I'm worried about. No more worries.

I find that as long as you regularly wipe down your tools with brake cleaner on a regular basis, tools don't rust easily.

Seriously, just give em a wiping with a heavily oiled rag. Doesn’t matter what oil. Motor oil, ATF, 3 in 1.......anything. Leave a good sheen on it and the steel will drink it in.

Rub em with oily steel wool then keep em lightly oiled . Works fine for me in the frozen swamp of Northern NY. with tools that aren’t plated.

Fluid Film is probably one of the best anti-rust treatments, as long as you don't mind that it's a bit sticky and smells of sheep.

Back in my gun days I did some research on the best rust preventative and found a guy who did a fairly large scale test and Eezox came out on top, as I recall. It's very thin, like WD-40, but doesn't smell great either.

For that matter, WD-40 makes a product for long term rust prevention. Supposed to last a full year.

In the end, what most said about an oily rag is probably the easiest and should work just fine.

And #0000 steel wool (with oil) is great for removing surface rust on guns, without damaging the bluing. Should work fine on a prybar.

I feel your pain, I have the same deal but anything not chrome such as impact sockets.

My favorite so far is Amsoil MPHD which is like cosmoline. I put it on super thin with a rag and after it dries can't tell it's there. I think I'm in my second winter since treating them, no rust.

I've tried Fluid film which I like and use for many things but didn't last but a few months on stuff for me.

Above mentioned LPS3 could be really good, I use it at work but never thought to use it on tools.

Fluid film

While somewhat pricey Fluid Film is the best for protecting tools from rust. I spray some on a rag and apply it to just about anything in my tool box that's not painted or chrome. It works great on things like drill press and saw tables too. I have never had anything rust that I applied Fluid Film to!

glass bead then wipe with oil or spray with WD40. Next time they get rusty repeat. Fe and O2 = Fe203. It will happen unless you remove the Oxygen or the iron. Rust never sleeps. Add an electric motor in the shop that makes sparks and hence Ozone (O3), and the problem gets worse. Add water and the Fe will steal O from the H2O.

I've taken to blueing all unplated steel with Oxpho Blue. An occasional wipe with an oily rag completes the job. The basis for Oxpho is supposed to be phosphate. All I know is it works.
