HELP!!! Sourcing Project Metal

So I go to the two scrap yards that are located in my area this morning and got treated like a criminal. No you can't go in the yard and look around, we have insurance regulations, no we don't have a small cutoff's area, insurance laws forbid you from doing anything like that. I can only bring in metal to sell them, it's against the rules for them to sell me anything. I used to carry home all the "junk" from work but now that I am retired, I don't have that option anymore. So where do you guys get all the project metal other than buying new 20 foot long sections from a steel company? :(

Hard around here. The junkyard carries some stuff sometimes. I just got into building stuff, so I havent run into any major problems. But I'd have to drive 30 miles to buy a sheet of metal.

Look in the materials section on Craigslist and search for "steel," "iron," "metal," or "aluminum." I've bought a LOT of materials there, ranging from new sheets of 16 ga sheet to cutoffs of 6061 plate and rounds up to 4" diameter.

It's a crapshoot, but sometimes it really pays off.

we have one multi location company around here that behaves as you describe. They would be ok to sell to, but you won't get anything out of there.

And then there is another yard, a little hole next to some train tracks where the guys are happy to let peopl walk the yard and buy. selection is a bit limited, but they seem to have got a deal with some kind of large steel supplier as they are getting more raw stock to go with the cars and appliances they get a lot of.

I'm on good terms with them so they cut me some deals and buy things they wouldn't sell to others, but I've been buying off them regular for almost five years now, so it's taken a while to get to that level of deal. when they close up I'll probably be out of luck locally for scrap steel.

if I need something specific, I call up thelocal steel shop and deal with their counter guy. Good guy, been buying off him for year now too. They are a combination steel warehouse, dealing with building companies(steel girders, etc) and a customer steel fabrication shop. They are the go to guys if you need a custom steel railing around here. so they will deal with me as a small fish. prices are good, selection is solid. but if I can get it out of the scrap yard, I get a much better deal.

your profile desn't say where your at, but depending on where you are at, you may still have an old school scrap yard around if you dig hard enough.

We have a steel scrap yard 10 mins away that let's me search the piles and get whatever, but they won't cut stuff up. As for insurance, they're not too worried as they have even let my kids walk around on the piles while the crusher and magnet are swinging nearby (I thought better of it myself)...

For cut stuff though I go to a business called MetalMet that makes stuff and have some stock in back.

Check your industrial pages or cruise your industrial area. There's plenty of businesses that cut long stock.

I'm lucky enough to have this place http://www.mcneilus.com/home.html 10 min from my place, they have a city desk thats open to the public and they have the building full of drop that I can go through and if they don't have it there I can buy a full piece from them from the main building, then just drive up, pull inside and have them load it up.

Depends what you are looking for, there is lots of stuff out on garbage days all looking for a new home. It might look like junk to most people, but to me it is new project material. Good useable sheet metal (stoves, furnaces...most are bolted together), tubing with nice bends already (chairs, old chrome kitchen sets, road hockey nets), bed rails...........and the list goes on and on.

If you are in any size of city, you'll have many, many small companies that are making all kinds of stuff out of metals. Find these areas and drive around and have a look behind these places. Talk to people, and tell them you are making XY and Z and need some stuff to practice your welding, sheet metal skills, etc, etc.

I have a favorite spot that makes filing cabinets and stop by ocassionally to clean up their crates (firewood) that brings in the steel. [Good wood, BTW usually 2 X 4 and 4 X 4 hard maple and oak] They bring me inside to look at their scrap.....14 16 and 18 Ga. steel in various small pieces.

Why not go back to where you previously worked??

Here ya go if you live around here...........http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/mat/1606663279.html

around here quite a few of the steel suppliers have gone under. i can usually scrounge up what i need dumpster diving. i needed a piece of 1/4" wall 3" square tube for a set of spring mounts, went by a local industrial/ steel supplier, and talked to the counter guy. they called back to the warehouse, and directed me to the area where they had small 3' and shorter cut offs laying around. i found what i needed, took it back up to the counter, paid $5 and got me through another part of the project.
ive bought small quantities of tubing from a race car fab shop when i needed to

I am in Augusta, GA and would be willing to drive to a scrap almost anywhere in GA or South Carolina that was willing to allow walk ins. Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.

I would suggest that you swing by a local machine or fabrication shop. You might pay a tad more but you will likely be able to get small quantities of exactly what you are looking for.

My metal guy that I used to go through for everything was a small hole in the wall place out in the middle of no where. He used to sell me drops for scrap price. When scrap dropped down around .10 a pound he just told me to load up whatever I wanted as it wasn't worth his time to send it down to the scrap yard and he didn't want to sit on a giant pile of scrap until the prices turned around. He has since gone out of business so currently I'm going through some bigger suppliers and am working my way up to knowing the yard guys in hopes that they will drop a few scraps in my orders from time to time.

Scrapyard by my house wont sell either. They do a huge volume and figure it is not worth the time and trouble. It kills me to go in there and see 8 ft. stainless steel tables piled up ready to be crushed.

Most steel supply around here sell drops, under a certain size go for scrap. I get a lot of good stuff from behind stores as well. Tractor Supply and others like that get their big equipment in some pretty sturdy steel frames. Backside of shopping centers that are not kept up so well (bad side of town) and industrial parks are also good places.

Thanks for that link.
From the website they look very comparable to IMS. For some reason, they didn't come up in my searches. Going to have to check them out...I'm feeling the need to fire up the welder again.

Go to auctions were they are getting rid of old farm equipment. A lot of good metal in those things cheap. That is if you have the room to store it until you need it.

Guess I'm lucky. There's a "junk yard" in the next town over. They pick out the "good" stuff and sell it for .30 LB. I picked up a 6"X"6"X 8ft piece of "H" beam (I'm making a new logsplitter), and a 18" square piece of 3/4" plate steel for 50 bucks.

Go to the local scrapper and just sit in your car or truck and wait for folks to bring in truckloads of stuff. Ask them if you could look over their pile and they might be willing to unload some of it before it goes to the crusher.

Ohhh man I love those old barns like that. They're like time capsules. Wish I had one. Ever see that show American Pickers??

That would be one of my dream jobs. I just love old stuff.
