Hi,

I'm looking for some random tools for work that im finding i need ASAP.

46mm 6 point 1/2 drive socket. Snap on make one but it's £50 GBP ($64!)

I don't want anything China made which rules out a lot of options.

34mm spanner (wrench) again Snappy make one at $173! It's a bit too expensive.

I don't mind Japanese stuff i have a few Koken items which are great but as far as i know they don't make the above.

Thanks

Hello Rosso,
That is a very large socket for 1/2" drive. Maybe you can find an O.T.C. brand truck wheel bearing hub socket in 1 -13/16" to do the job.
As to the spanner 1- 5/16" wrenches are common here. While not exactly 34mm I'll bet it would fit ok.

You won't find many of the top level tool makers making a 1/2" drive socket that large, as 1/2" drive isn't really strong enough. Many of the cheaper makers do, this has been my experience. Buy the snap on or get a 3/4" drive and one of those reducer inserts if you can get away with the extra length. I have a Hazet 3/4" drive.
34mm spanner is pretty easy to find
Stahlwille do it in both 13 and 14 patterns, I would get the 14.
Facom do it in 440 but they are quite short and Taiwan made, should only be £30 odd.

I was doing some more looking and Elora, Facom both do a long pattern 34mm spanner and Beta do a short.
Elora long is about £35 on eBay, pretty cheap for German made.

I don't really need the strength in a 46mm socket. It's for doing Merc V6/V8 oil filter housing seals.

Stahlwille stuff all german made ?

I think Wright would be your best bet. They do big stiff like this and are cheaper then SO. Maybe try Epsteins.

Think the problem you are gunna have buddy is the 1/2 drive.
Personally id go 3/4 and reducer/adapter, that way your worlds you oyster.

However the koken isnt a bad choice

Stahlwille mostly German made, spanners and sockets definitely are.
If its for filters, there are plenty of specific filter sockets out there, mostly 3/8" drive through and very low profile.
The Koken will do fine though, I have never had a bad experience with them.

It's for actually removing the oil filter alloy housing from the block, common fault the seal at the bottom leaks. You take the 36mm oil filter cap off (plastic) and right in the bottom under the filter is a 46mm for taking the housing off the engine.

I could go 3/4 but i don't have any other 3/4 stuff so i would be buying an adapter that i don't really need hence why i was leaning toward 1/2

Thanks for the Koken link that looks ideal for the 46mm.

I don't recall it needing to be thinwall, the 46mm i borrowed off a mate was a standard thickness socket. I do think though it will need to be a non impact as the head of the nut is very shallow, the beveled edge of the typical impact will reduce the contact area on the nut i think and i really really really don't want to round one off.

That Hazet socket is bizzare a 46mm 3/8 socket !?

Those filter sockets are designed to get those plastic hex filter housings apart, its only a low torque application hence the 3/8" drive and extreme low profile. I remember I bought my brother one for his Lupo TDI so he wouldn't raid my 3/4" stuff for the socket, think it was 36mm.

Its not the filter cap, its the filter housing itself.

You can see the nut at the bottom of the housing

The seal that fails

46mm = 1.81102 inches

1-13/16" = 1.8125 inches (or 46.038 mm)

no idea if that's any help considering your comment above about the minimal purchase you can get on the nut with a socket.
looks like Sunex makes a 1/2" drive 1-13/16" 6-point impact, but it's got a fairly significant taper at the business end of the broach.

Who knows?
Cheapest option and grind to fit. Chop saw would get it done too.

Not pretty, but then your paycheck won't care who's an ugly Betty.

So i bought a Stahlwhille 34mm spanner which arrived today, not sure what to make of it. For a 34mm it's a bit thin the jaws are only about 5mm thick. The main shaft is pretty thin too, i am comparing it to Snappy's which are thicker than most.

Went with the Koken 46mm socket, waiting for it to come.
