My father in law gave me a hammer he got from his father. I cannot ID the brand nor the use. Maybe the collective knowledge on these forums has the answer.

What I know:
- Faces have a slight crown
- Non magnetic metal, seems stainless
- Marking says: patented Nov. 9 1926 patented 1927
- Brand seems to be: WSS or VVSS or SSW or SSVV
- The father of my father in law was a dentist, but my father in law did not think he used it for his profession

I thought he could do a search of the pat number also...but my eyes do not see any numbers to look up just the years 1926 &27 (Kevin it could be pat started in 26 and granted in 27 )?

It so does look like a jewelers planishing hammer.

WSS brought up an Ebay lot of dentist tools. Searching dental hammer I found this little monster http://aditek.trustpass.alibaba.com...74-106836918/Dental_Elevator_Hammer_type.html
which looks like the "hammer" is actually a handle of a dental tool that may have been damaged and salvaged by drilling for a proper hammer handle. It looks like a cool hammer, but I don't know if it would stand up to much hard use.
