Help troubleshooting Reznor overhead heater

Hi, I have a second hand Reznor model SCB125-6 that came out of an unused paint room at my buddies work.

It installed without issue and worked for about 2 weeks before it developed this problem. At first it seemed like a faulty fan switch but after replacing it the problem remains. When the unit cycles, first the exhaust fan comes on, then the burner lights, it heats up and then the blower comes on - at least that's what should happen. About 90% of the time I can hear the "click" when the blower should come on, but it doesn't. Here's where it gets slightly more odd. After the blower fails to come on, the burner will turn off, but then the blower will come on a minute or so later with no burner lit!! Then sometimes the blower will keep going and the burner will light again, and sometimes it just shuts right back off after a few seconds.

To add even more confusion, sometimes (rarely) it works normally, and sometimes the blower won't come on at all.

Any idea's? Like I said I've already replaced the fan switch and that didn't solve the problem. This unit also has a limit control, time delay relay, something called an "eco device". It's also worth noting that the fan switch is also wired to a 24v transformer which I was told probably acts as some sort of delay. As you can probably tell I'm only vaguely familiar with HVAC so any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Could be a bad blower fan, my advice is to install a light in the blower circuit, if you notice the blower is not running and the light is lit you have a bad blower...

loose wires, bad ground, this could be multiple issues, reznor hangers like a nice ground...

What is the model number? It could also be a bad switching relay on the fan circuit...

I would check the flame sensor, the click you hear may be the gas valve shutting off. If the flame sensor doesn't detect the flame within 3-5 seconds the gas valve shuts off. try cleaning the flame sensor with a dollar bill, you don't want to use anything too aggressive. Flame sensor problems can be intermittent.

You need a voltmeter or ticker to verify voltage to /from each component. On the 24 volt side you will need a voltmeter also.

Thanks for the tips all. It's a model SCB125-6.

The gas valve is not shutting off - I have a visual on the flame. The click is definitely from it "requesting" blower operation.

If I apply power directly to the blower motor it comes on no problem, as well as working occasionally in the normal way. I wouldn't think the blower motor is bad or it probably wouldn't work at all, right?

I'll have to poke around with the voltmeter and see whats what.

JonJon1, when you say "switching relay on the fan circuit" what are you referring too? The only switch I'm aware of is the "fan switch" or "fan control" as Reznor calls it in the parts diagram - which as I said has already been replaced. Is there another relay in the fan separate from the other controls?

Thanks again

You say in your first post "the burner will turn off", the blower coming on and off is probably caused by a snap disk and it may be doing just what it is supposed to do. If the burner is shutting off I would be looking for the reason that is happening.

Yes, after the blower fails to come on the burner eventually goes off.

I think I found the problem to be a bad blower motor. Wacked it with a mallet when it was supposed to be coming on and starts right up, every time. I guess I got lucky when I applied power directly to it.
