help unload lift

So after years of wanting a lift I purchased a Bendpak MD-6XP midrise scissor lift. I had it delivered to my work and then loaded it on my trailer. Now, how do I get it off the trailer????

After reading a lot of threads I found many used a engine hoist, cherry picker, to lift it off. That seems like it would work as I could back the trailer into the garage, the legs of the hoist would go under the trailer and I could just lift up and driver the trailer out.

This is there I see an issue, the legs of the hoist would be under the lift. How do you get it on the ground. I was thinking of setting it on jack stands to get it off the hoist, but how do I get it off the stands. I may just be over thinking things here. How did others tackle this with the tools I mentioned.

Can't you just unpack it on the trailer and take it off one piece at a time?

You need a lift with an arm longer than the legs - or a boom extension.

It's not that heavy. I've moved mine around plenty of times without help.

You can just slide it out of the trailer.

Or if you do lift it off with an engine hoist you can then just set it down on the legs (it'll probably be half on and half off) and then slide the hoist out from under it.

I sat one end on a cheap HF roller dolly and lifted the other with the cherry picker. Off the trailer and into position was easy...standing them upright was the tricky part.

Set it on cribed lumber higher than the picker legs. Tie it to the wall of the garage, pull out till it's almost off, put some tires under it and slide it off.

Lift with the engine hoist until you can pull the trailer forward leaving about 1/3 hanging off the trailer. Set it back down on a jack stand or cribbing so that it is higher than the trailer on that end. Move the picker to the other end, lift it and drive the trailer out of the way. Now you can carefully swing the picker around until the end is between the legs of the picker. Set that end down, and do the other end.

Get a chain, lift it from the top. Set it down so you can push or pull it into place (come-along). I have that same lift, and love it!

Hopefully it is still on a pallet on the trailer and therefore can slide a little bit better than if it were on the trailer by itself. What would work is if you could tie it off to something then just drive the trailer out and have the lift fall onto some old tires. Once there, jack up one side, remove tires, set down on some lumber, repeat to the other side. From there it'll at least be flat and hopefully all can be unpacked. Use your jack to lift it from the hitch point and teeter it back on to the round end, remove wood and set it down. Use the dolly to move it around from there. Easy peasy just watch your balance.

Random question as I had just got mine not too long ago myself, did Bendpak send you yellow arms or black arms?

I got yellow arms with mine. Seems that is how they come now and the pads raw steel not black. All of the hardware and pads that came in the same box were rusted very badly on mine, I am working with Bendpak on that right now.

Plan is to rent a hoist. Pull trailer in the garage and use hoist to lift it off the trailer. mine is still on the pallet so I can slide it back some to help. Then using jacks and the dolly it comes with get it into position. I have a steel bar that I will strap to the top of the lift and then use the floor jacks to lift it up off of the legs of the engine hoist. Hopefully it will work and nothing and no one will get broken.

Part of my issue is that I have put down an 80x44 section of racedeck in the middle of one of the garage bays that I want to set the lift on. So I have to get it on the racedeck without moving the racedeck from its position. Kind of creating my own hell. If I had a tractor or fork lift, like some of you lucky guys it would be a much easier task.

Yea I got the yellow arms too and a bunch of the pieces had surface rust on them as well but the "date of manufacture" and the date I received it were only about a month off so I don't know how they were stored to get rust on them that quickly in inland So Cal. Prepare to get yellow scuff marks on that blue also!

Another idea, if you are willing to gamble some, or have the ability, tie the end of the lift off that doesn't have the rollers to something high, ceiling joist, very sturdy branch, gantry crane, etc and then drive the trailer out slowly (given that it has a ramp). This will allow the ramp portion to catch the rollers and free up the underside allowing you to remove the pallet and strapping, then lower it with a jack.

Then maybe get a sheet of plywood to be half on the race deck and half off. Wheel it up on to the ply wood then off onto the Racedeck which should help in not shifting the pad in anyway.

Or find someone that works at Costco or Sams Club or a shipping terminal that will let you borrow a pallet jack. That might be easy depending on who you know.

How high is your trailer? Does it open out the back?

IMHO, you wouldn't need to go through all the trouble to rent a hoist just to unload it. It's really not that heavy. The lift has wheels on one end and is made so you can lever the pump cart under one end and drag it around to where you need it. Sure it takes a bit of grunting for one guy to do it, but I've done it by myself plenty of times so it's not too heavy.

I've also unloaded it off the back of my truck (which is pretty high) by myself without a lift and it was pretty easy. I just pulled the lift out until it was not quite halfway hanging out, then attached a strap between the lift and the front of the bed with a little slack. Then I slid the lift a little farther until it was teetering off the edge but could go no farther because of the strap. Then I loosened the strap slowly until the end of the lift was on the ground.

Then you loosen the strap and either slide the lift some more or drive forward so that just a bit of the lift is still on the back of your trailer (or truck in my case). Then put the strap back on again with a little slack and pull (or drive) a little more until it's hanging from the strap. Then lower to the ground and you're done. A come-along would work too instead of a strap.

Like i said, this was from a high flat-bed truck. From a relatively low trailer it's be even easier.

my trailer is a flat deck trailer with a wood plank deck. Used it to haul my car around on. Do not know how high it is exactly, about my knee cap if previous bumps serve me right.

Interesting that yours was rusted as well. Mine shows being made last month on the 10th. The box the arms, and lift pads came is clearly showed signs of being wet at one point and being retaped. The other two boxes that had the pump and hose showed no signs of being wet previously. Spoke to the warrantee guy this morning to follow up and it sounds like they will be sending replacement parts. Sounds like they had a batch of these kits get wet.

On an off topic note the race ramps that I got look like they will work perfectly and are amazingly light. It has 6 pieces, 3 for each side, and are 4 inches tall to give clearance over the lift. Entire system, all 6 pieces, weights less than 80lbs so I can take it to the track with me or when using the lift removed all of it or just sections depending on where I am working.
