Hey guys,

A nice vise finally came up for sale local to me and I need some quick help to get an idea of the value of a chain hoist. Reason I am asking is I am looking at a Prentiss No95 vice and the seller is wanting to sell the vise and this chain hoist together. I just want to make sure I am not over paying. I might end up keeping the hoist as it looks pretty cool...but just need some affirmation on value.

Seller is an older gentleman who says he received the vice and hoist from his grandfather. He doesn't know the details of make or model. :dunno: I know I'm not giving you much...sorry!!

There are two different Yale hoists for sale on my local CL. One is $65 and has been re-posted for well over a year. The other is $75, seems to be in better condition, and I believe is a newer ad. Take that information for what it is worth.

I will probably make an offer on one and hang it from the ceiling of our cabin. Maybe use it to store one of our kayaks during the winter.

New ones are a lot smaller and lighter. That said I'd still prefer something like that than a new one provided nothing is wore out that can't easily be fixed. I like the bell shaped chain guides on the hand sprocket. I'd de-rust it but not paint it, just use a varnish or something to keep it from re-rusting. The open hook for hanging it is now illegal, they have to have a clasp that springs shut to prevent it from unhooking if something caused it to lift up. You can wrap 6 or 8 wraps of #16 wire across the tip and the back of the hook to close it off and it's legal again. You can also buy a spring clasp to install on that hook but I's just wire it unless you're going to be moving it a lot.

I could see it being worth $50 - $75 but not to a guy who's not looking for one. New ones likely have a ASA approved or similar safety inspection plate on them which might give you some bargaining power with the old guy who's probably seeing yesterdays' value (i.e.: 40 years ago) on it. I know I'm like that with a lot of things.

Thats basically worth its weight in scrap or what someone is willing to pay for the "industrial art" market.. NOBODY is gonna buy that thing to actually use it..
