Help Wanted! Pooling water near threshold

Gentlemen,

Beginning last winter (and now for the past couple weeks that we have snow) melt water from our cars has pooled at the threshold of my garage door. It creates a small ridge of ice on the outside of the door, and water pools inside my garage creating a mess (it's an attached garage). Water doesn't seem to be able to drain fully out (even though it's sloped to the door), but enough gets out to create the ice ridge you see in the pictures. It's strange.

I know the obvious answer is to cut in a trench drain, but this isn't something that's been a problem forever - it just started happening last year.

The garage is attached, insulated, but unheated. It stays about 35 degrees almost all winter long.

Please see the attached photos and give me your suggestions.

Thanks

I don't see how it could NOT freeze there. 35 degrees inside and then it seeps outside. It is going to freeze very, very quickly.

Maybe rent a concrete saw or pay a sawing company to cut 1 or two small grooves sloped to one side of the garage (inside) then angle them out the door? It'd give the water a real route to travel at least. It's still going to freeze once it hits the asphalt though.

I agree with Wilson. It will go to the low spot and if that spot is below 32 it will freeze there. Do you have a drain in the garage for the water to go to? I would say some settling happened outside the door and now your low area is at the threshold area. Maybe cut or grind an path for the water to escape and toss some ice melt outside the door area.

You say this is a new problem.
What has changed?
If it wasn't a problem before and it is now, something has created it.

Your sitch is not all that strange. The ground is frozen so of course the run off in the garage is going to freeze. What is the issue? Is it preventing your door from shutting all the way? Try some rock salt outside along the door bottom.

Also make sure the weatherstrip on the bottom of the door is clean so it seals flat to the concrete when closed. There's really no way to prevent this as every time you open the door some water will run out and freeze. You could always get some Racedeck floor tiles so you're not actually walking on the dirty, salty water and tracking it in your house. ;)
