I found these in a lot of tools I grabbed recently. Anyone have any idea what they are used for? I checked the names/markings and didn't find anything in Google.

That explains the tiny wheel on the top. Im assuming it's to score the glass. I'll check for a YouTube video to see how to use these things. Thanks.

If they're old with a hardened steel cutter, I'd keep them only for curiosity's sake. One needs a very sharp cutter to score glass to make a good cut. I got a tungsten carbide-edged cutter a few months ago for notalot, and it does a LOT better job than the old steel ones, especially as those age.

The new ones come in a variety of shapes, including ones that look exactly like the ones you have.

It amazes me how many of these are out there. It seems like I have NEVER gone through a tool box at a garage sale or flea market that DIDN'T have one of these in them. Were people cutting glass like crazy years ago?

Probably. Fixing the multi-paned windows after "those darn kids" broke them.

I kind of miss the whole ritual of replacing a pane of glass. Cutting the glass, the push points, playing with the putty, I got really good at it. I've never had one of these double glazed windows get broken, I don't even know what the procedure to fix one is.

Many older home repair books give a procedure for doing this.

I have my grandfather's glass cutter, probably 70 years old, same shape. Works fine, be kept it in a jar with oil.

I just figured out how to replace double pane glass. Yes those darned kids! Not bad at all, typically a trim strip holds the glass unit in the frame, double sided foam tape provides the seal to the vinyl frame.

Local price was about $120 for the unit (36" square). Of course a few others were starting to fog. One cracked pane turned into 6 replacements.....

When using these cheap cutters you have to make one pass and one pass only . If you cut over a score you'll ruin the wheel and need to discard it. The skill is making one steady constant pressure pass and then standing at one end, turning downward on the small piece while pulling it outward. You actually hear the glass "tear" up the score line.

I just picked up a diamond tip cutter which is awesome.

The notches are to crack the edge of the piece off somewhere other than the score line, and the ball end is to tap on the cut section and shatter then entire pane...
