Help? What is this Snap-On box model?

I recently bought everything from a retiring body man. This is the box, full of tools too ;)

Now I'm trying to rehab the upper chest and I can't seem to figure out exactly what the model is on it. Here's a pic, anyone know what model this setup is, especially the upper box...

KR637 top, KR657 bottom. Late 80s. They are stamped on the back.

Thanks... are there any other sources or alternatives for the 8-2488ALRS drawer slides other than Snap-On at ~$80/pair?

Not really. You can try your luck with a warranty claim, but they have no legal obligation since you are not the original owner.

How many sets will you need?

5 would be fantastic, but I can likely get away with just one set, or even just one (R).

The KR637 has really old sliders. They are the same as the 8-2488ALRS sliders in the lower cabinet, but they are completely unmarked other than (L) or (R). One of the right ones in the top box disintegrated seemingly long ago and the rest of them are pretty groddy with some corrosion. Perils of a bondo rich workplace for 30+yrs I would imagine.

Meanwhile, the sliders in the lower cabinet are not only marked, but like new (compared to the uppers anyway). I may swap 4 pairs from there to the upper box after I get done de-grunging both of them... will still need at least a (R) slider to complete.

Thanks for the info and any help with this. After an 18yr hiatus from building cars, kids are grown now and I'm getting back some time and $ to hit it again, hence this purchase. When i say this was "full of tools", I wasn't kidding I'll post some more as I go through it all. I'm not even going to pretend it is going to be as pretty as some of the other projects I've been looking at one here (electrolysis, really?) but it will definitely be a functional work box for me.

an email to SO customer service usually has replacement tools/parts at my door within a week.

those are solid old(er) boxes, but the top is my least favorite of any box ive ever owned. i hate the stack of narrow drawers, they seem like such a waste of drawer space to me.

btw i have 2 sets of them in the garage...:spit:

They have sent me replacement slides no questions. I recomend that you only ask for a couple of sets and then if you want to replace a couple more then wait a few months and they don't even seem to,question it

Yes snap on has sent me replacement slides, Even after I told them that I purchased it used. The person on the phone advised me that it was life time warranted.

Nice find! Snap on replaced slides for me, they requested old ones sent back to them (they paid shipping) 2 weeks later I got new slides. I was upfront in my request and offered to pay for the parts and they still sent them for free.

I'll be damned if I can find a serial number anywhere on the thing though. Is there a secret spot on these? No, it is not on the back lower right...

It's on the back of each box. Going from memory, the KR637 is stamped on the lower right and the KR657 is stamped on the upper right? :headscrat:

You really don't need the serial number though.

Cool, thanks. I'll look again, but it isn't where it "should be" so far..

Another question... The top box tends to want to slide around a bit if you roll the whole thing around. There doesn't seem to be any holes that match between the two for a guide pin or the like. Is there some tricks or mods y'all have found usefull to keep the upper box in place with this setup?

They are stamped, the stamping can be difficult to see at times though. Bright light, odd angles.

There are matching holes to bolt them together. As you probbaly know the 637 sits on runners. There are oval slots that allow you to bolt the boxes together. At least there are on both of my 657s. I never move mine after loaded, the shear weight and 1/8" board keep the top box in place. Now if it is rocking something might be warped and then you have a problem.

snapon roller cabs used to have a thin piece of hardboard/masonite on the top.

both my new ones did anyway....:headscrat

Yep, my boxes have the Masonite pieces with holes to run bolts through to tie the chests together. It's kind of a black shiny material one side and unfinished on the other.

Well, just got off the phone with Snap-On support.
4 new drawer slide sets on both sides & cover stops for the lid are on their way
...under warranty, no return necessary.

it may have helped that I told her she was a "Goddess of efficiency", seems I was the first pleasant customer she's had so far this morning! Way cool

+1 on my customer service experience with Snap on. Very professional, polite and knowledgeable. If only mg cable company was that good!
