HELP: Which size box? (warning: clean tools)

So I've built up a fair chunk of tools over the years and haven't really got a storage solution (pretty much in bags and boxes in my rental unit) and I'd like to move this stuff to the garage.



I'm pretty decided on either the HF 44" or 56" boxes but unsure which capacity will work for me. I bought the 5 drawer cart for a friend for all his help on my car and we used it on the job and it's wayyyy too small.




This is pretty much most (75%) of it other than the imperial wrenches and some odds and ends or things in plastic cases that I will leave in them like the 3/4 drive sockets, heatgun, etc.





I don't think I'll keep the 4th "socket" tray together as it's pretty much a waste of space, but the 3 other ones are great and they measure 21.5" x 10.5".



I'd like to stick with bottom cabinet only for having a work surface on top. Ideally a hutch so I can leave the screwdrivers and T handle wrenches out for regular access. (or mounted to the side of the box)



I'll do custom laser cut foam inserts soon enough.

I'm in Canada but have decent access to the border.

44" is an awesome buy on sale. If you want more space the price of the 56" is almost enough to get you a "better" quality box used (by better I mean more user-friendly features)

I would suggest the 56" for those two reasons.

You can pack the 44" to the gills using space saving racks but displaying the tools in foam inserts take up a TON of space fast.

Then there is the work surface issue. 56" obviously gives you much more top surface. You can always add/fab a larger bench top to the 44" but unless you have access to free material, it may end up costing close to the price difference of the 56" when its all said and done, depending on the material choice. If you're personality type likes foam inserts, I'd imagine you would like a nice bench top to go along with a nice box.



I just purchased the HF 56" myself and also a fan of the tweaker foam inserts. Nothing more gratifying in my opinion. Here is an example on how quick foam would fill a drawer. This is just metric wrenches, and a modest amount in my opinion. Foam to come

I found the HOMAK RS-PRO thread here, and I think the 54" ticks all my boxes as it's deep enough for my socket trays and seems everyone really likes it.

Will try to take a look at one next time I am across the border.

I chose the 44inch Us general box. I didn’t know what I would use all the deep drawers on the 56 for. I really like the 44 so far and have considered tying two together, or adding another 26 inch one.

I just got a HF 44" top and bottom during their parking lot sale. Considered the 56" and also did a lot of searching for used tool truck boxes as well as researching on which boxes seemed to last and we're reasonably priced. Decided on the 44". If I need more room I'll buy another 44" base cabinet because for the price at the parking lot sale $399 I can buy two bases for almost the price of the 56" at $749. Good luck with the decision. Should be nice with the laser cut foam.
