THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION. NORMALLY THAT WOULD BE FINE BUT RIGHT NOW A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER IS LEAKING DOWN IN THE WELL FROM THE OLD CASING, ETC. I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE WELL PUMP, ETC. TO FIX THE PROBLEM WHICH I WILL TO LATER THIS YEAR. BUT FOR NOW, I NEED TO SHUT OFF THE PUMP TO KEEP IT FROM CYCLING ON/OFF DUE TO THE SLOW LEAK UNDERGROUND. GOOD OBSERVATION.
Just install a check valve at the top. They are all of 30 bucks, and come in 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", at home depot and lowes. Then you can wait to replace the pump until the pump goes out.

Yes that’s the check valve.

Yes you could undo the union and see if water is coming out

Sometimes check valves get gummed up and clogged with garbage minerals etc. causing them to not properly seal. Or the spring gives out
wyliesdiesels, you just saved me from having my well guy install a new $4,000 pump system. We removed the check valve and there was basically nothing left inside to hold the water from flowing backwards down the well. We replaced all of the piping from the tank to the union, also found a slow leak in an irrigation valve. Once both were repaired, pressure holds at 70 psi and never drops with the pump off!! You are a miracle man! Also, I thought my pump guy was a friend of mine, but when I called him to discuss the leaking of water back down the well, he kept avoiding my question and just kept on with air in the tank, leaking underground, blah, blah, blah. And kept on with having to replace the entire assembly. Ends up he's pretty unscrupulous for not suggesting to me in the first place to check the check valve and never acknowledging a leaking check valve when I called him after I thought about your reasoning. Great job, again. Thanks so very much, that's a huge amount of money to us. So glad I found this forum. I'll do my best to pay it forward with whatever knowledge I may have to help out another person in need! John in Minnesota

yup. the minerals in the water will eventually corrode and eat away the plate and spring....

when you said water was leaking back into the well, i knew exactly why.... but couldnt tell if you had a check valve up top or down in the well since the insulation was covering the piping.... glad i saved you some dough... hopefully the metal bits didnt screw up the blades on the pump at the bottom of the well

and 70Psi is really good pressure. most residential wells out here are lucky to have 50-60lbs
