I have been searching the web for weeks for a simple carport/pole barn design but have come up short. I finally stumbled upon this site this morning and hope i am going to finally get some answers.

Here is what i am looking to do. I want a 20x20 carport/pole barn to park my 2010 silverado and sedan under. At this time i dont have alot to spend so i am not worried about having it enclosed, i just want protection from above (bird poop)!!! I want it to be "A frame" style with the peak above the length of the cars if that makes sense.

Can anybody share some plans for something that can be self built with a buddy or two?

Thanks in advance

Instead of 20x20 you might want to think of 24x24. That will give you about 8 foot between poles. That might save you some money down the road when buying lumber. Also if you use a convential truss you might want to put some kind of ceiling in to keep the birds from nesting or resting above you vehicles. You are at the right sight just keep looking and asking questions, lots of helpful memebers. Good Luck

just like z385488 said, 24x 24. You could have 3 uprights on each side on 12' centers . Some pole buildings now use 2x6's for the uprights with 2x12's on top. The inside uprights are shorter and the 2x12's sit on top. Then the two outer 2x6's extend to the top of the 2x12's and are sandwich
in. Then buy trusses to meet your need. I think the standard trusses that go 24" on center may be cheaper than going on 8' centers. Price it out both ways. Two foot centers with plywood on top is my choice and then shingle roof to match house. Build walls later as funds become available. I think if time is a factor the 24" centers will be quicker and easier to handle. Call a local guy and get his estimate and suggestions.

does anybody have a guess on what this would cost?

I have less than $16,000.00 in mine total, but that was doing a lot of the labor myself. Check out my sight and see what you can get in the south east for that kind of money if your willing to do alot of the work yourself.

I love Armour Metals. I bought a 36x40x14 from them and had them put it up and i bought a 30x40x10 and installed it myself after watching them. Great product.

Check out carport.com. They have really budget friendly steel structures.

I built my 40X40 using the steel trusses from armour metals. Trusses are designed for 10' on center spacing. You may be able to go with a 12' spacing but I would ask them. I built the shop myself without any help and I believe a 20X20 carport is very do-able even without help with minimum investment.
(I did hire a boom truck to lift my trusses)
