I'm getting my humble suburban garage in order. One of the first first things is replacing my little craftsman 5' sheet metal workbench. I plan to repurpose it as my wife's flower potting table on the other side of the garage.

I want to put it on casters, but there's nothing solid underneath as its just stamped metal. What's the best, relatively inexpensive way to put wheels on this thing? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348799378.104656.jpg

Could you cut a 2"x4" piece of wood to match the legs and use metal screws along the side (screwing into the wood) then place casters on the wood? Maybe paint the wood black to make it slightly less noticeable?

Cut a 2x8or2x10 the size of the opening inside the bottom of the leg. Screw through the sheet metal into the wood, attach casters to board.

That's sort of what I'm considering. I also thought of making an entire dolly or two small dollies from 2x4s and 3/4" plywood that the bench sides would fit down into. But that seems like way too much work.

I re-enforced mine with light angle iron (industrial racking frames) making a base and top to fit then welding a solid piece of sheet metal to the back. I added castors to the bottom. The back sheet metal stops it from shifting side to side but an "X" brace of strapping would have been fine for that as well. Make sure the thing is squared up before you tack it together. You could also bolt it together if you don't have a welder. It turned a flimsy pos into something useful.

Another possibly good source for inexpensive angle iron, if you were going to strengthen it with a base as Zoolhound recommended, is to see if Goodwill has any boxspring mattress bed rails. They often go cheap.

I would box it up with some sheet metal

Or

Cut the legs off until your reach that bottom shelf and mount the casters there. The benefit of this is it will keep the bench at the same height.
