I have an old delta drill press that works good, but I think the anvil/spindle is bent. I know parts are obsolete, but I was thinking if someone could help me figure out the model number of the press, I might find a used part somewhere. The only thing on the press is the serial number. I have included a few photos.

It's a very early ~1940 delta 17" with MT2 taper spindle. Take a TIR reading with a half thou dial test indicator on the inside of the spindle taper. Make sure it is clean first.

I will check the runout, but I am pretty sure it is bent. It I don't have any luck straightening, do you think there is any chance of finding used parts?

go to owww.org and then the BOYD (bring out your dead) section. List the part as a WTB and play the waiting game. I've been a member for about 10 years and they're a great bunch of folks to buy/sell/trade machinery and parts.

Great drill press. What I'd do is check the spindle and chuck arbor for burrs/cleanliness, then reinstall. Mark the spindle and chuck, as the tang on the arbor lets it go in 2 different ways, install a piece of straight smooth round stock in the chuck, like a dowel or piece of shaft from an old shock absorber, and measure the runout about an inch from the chuck, and mark the high spot on the chuck. Then knock the arbor back out and reinstall 180 degrees from where it was the first time and measure the runout again. Is it in the same spot on the chuck? If so, the problem is with the chuck/arbor. If it's 180 from where it was, it's the spindle. If it's the spindle, I'd chuck up a piece of 1/2 " rod in the chuck and tap it around with a hammer. I can usually get the runout under .001" with this method and a little patience.
Good luck, Jim
