Hi all, I just bought used off of My Snap-On dealer a Microscan scan tool the price was right at 79.00 I tried it out to make sure it worked on my 99 Dakota and it found my bad o2 sensor with out problems. well today i got to test it out on a 08 Impala with an evap leak and the scanner displays no communication with vehicle. I hooked our OTC Genesis up to it and it worked no problem. I also tried the microtech on an 07 model car and the same problem. i believe the device needs to be updated via the internet. however i do not have the serial to usb cable. i downloaded the shop stream connect software however with out a cable that is not going to do me much good. also is there a charge for these updates for the generic scantool? I already have 100 bux into it i like the fact that it is a snap on but not enough to pay for an update when i can goto Napa and buy a scantool for cheap. Like I said, we have a Genesis at the shop i just thought this would be a nice little investment for in my personal box for my own use. please advise.

I don't know if updating it will do any good if it doesn't support CAN.

Those '07 and '08 vehicles use CAN for communications, which uses pins 6 and 14 on the DLC.

OBD2 uses pins 2, 7, 15 depending on which ISO protocol the vehicle uses.

Do you have pictures or a part number for the scanner. A lot of them offer a toll free tech support line.

it is the red model with the scroll wheel on the right side
the part number is eesc3071

i was able to use it on an 02 f150 today to fix a misfire. I am told that it can not do CAN. I presume that this is a newer protocol that the scanner can not do. I have been digging on the net but can not find much support for this older model I think it is from 2002 but I am not sure. I dont want to out any more money into it seeing as how cheap these have got just to get a new one. I do not have the data cable to hook it to a pc But am sure I could get one if I could get a software download.

thanks in advance. Chris
