Help with Baldor grinder capacitor

Hi all. Have an old (1960’s? 1970’s?) 10” Baldor grinder with what appears to be the wrong capacitor in it. The grinder runs fine, but sounds really sad trying to get up to speed. I put in new bearings, so mechanically everything is happy.

I’m not sure what to think, as the case of the cap looks to be of similar vintage/rust as the rest of the grinder, but having a 12MFD cap doesn’t make sense to me as a start capacitor. Btw it’s reading about 16MFD with a meter, so it’s bad either way.

Can some of you electrically inclined guys help out? I don’t want to waste money/hassle with returns on buying the direct replacement if my hunch is right and it should have something more like a 175+MFD start cap in it.

Machine tag still intact, amazingly.

Baldor still sells that model grinder (list price $1449!).

parts list calls for: CYL OIL CAP 12MFD/370V

You may want to check that fine electrical work against the connection diagram:

Thanks! I noticed when I bought this machine that it carries the same name as the current version. Would it use the same electrical setup after all these years?

Your Baldor grinder doesn't have a start capacitor. It uses a RUN capacitor only. 12uF sounds about right for a 1hp motor.

It's hard to say if the wiring has changed, but I believe you should be able to determine that by close examination and comparison. The fact that the grinder is dual voltage makes it more likely that the exceptional craftsman who did the prior wiring work did it wrong.

Well, I got the new capacitor installed along with a new power cord, new switch, and still have the same problem. Suggestions?

I have a 6in baldor from the 60’s or 70’s with the exact same problem. I took it to a reportable local motor shop, and they told me that it was the nature of the beast.

I would love to know the fix for this also.
