help with Big Daddy rivet gun

So i had to hit the road for a service call and set up the new guy with a job while i was gone. all he had to do was rivet new hinges into a roll up door. i dont know how the hell he messed this up.

i can no longer insert a new rivet into the tip and the handles no longer close. i took it apart and found nothing stuck inside. i tried to reposition the gears. when i position the gears in such a way that the handles look to be in the correct position it does not work correctly.

is anyone a wiz with these? do you mind advising me where the correct position of the gears should me?

I'll take a shot. after looking at the parts breakdown.....I would start at the full closed handle position then work backwards with each gear (#3) and rack #4 so as not to tear off teeth.

so i got this guy back together and it works except now after i complete installing the rivet, the remainder of the rivet shaft does not fall out. its stuck in the jaws.

yesterday i was rebuilding reduction boxes and this simple tool with so few parts is kicking my ***.
