My dad passed a decade or so and I have some of his tools that I plan on selling. I would like to get a fair price...but also get them to someone who will actually use them...and you guys are whom I trust on advising on middle of the road values...

If any of you GJ guys would like to work something out...PM me.

For now I am trying to decide if I value them and donate to the high school....or sell to some of you folks.

The socket set should sell for $ 150.00 - $ 200.00. To the right person , maybe more. I've seen the lathe tools sell for $ 100.00 to the right person. Are the carbide tipped or is there a tip protector on them ? If they are carbide tipped , I've seen them on Ebay for $ 75.00 each. That would be the asking price , not the sold price.

Good luck trying to sell the Starrett micrometers for anywhere near what they're worth. If you are trying to buy them, the asking prices are astronomical, but if selling them no one will want them for less than fire sale price. My Dad and I sold off the toolroom business he founded in the early sixties back in 2000, and it was depressing what the market was then. I don't think it's gotten any better as those skills are dying off fast.

You could put them on the classified here. You just need to figure out a shipping price. The flat rate boxes from the post office are pretty handy.

Unless you already have a lot of your fathers tools, I'd keep them. If they are used should matter, just seeing them would remind you of your father. I know the tools I have of my dad's aren't used much but I still think of him when I open the drawer for something else.

I sure wouldn't donate them to a school, they won't use them and they'll end up shoved in a drawer or sold off at auction. You'd be better off to give them to someone graduating from a school and really needs the tools but can't afford them.

Someone new to heavy equipment would really appreciate the 3/4" stuff, its expensive for someone starting out.

I am with you...I have my grandfather's and my dad's vices mounted on my bench...use them all the time and it does remind me of them. I kept a few things I use.

I am a firm believer in having nice tools...and using them. That is sort of what is motivating me....getting them used. Thanks for the comment.
