Hey guys,

I would like to construct a floating work bench in my one car garage. Since space is limited, i feel this would be the best option.

Can anyone post pictures of their setups or help me plan this out perfectly?

My plan is to attach a ledger board (I think thats what its called) to the concrete wall and then frame out the table top with 2x4's. I will then put supports that attach to the table top frame that diagonally run to the wall.

Once it is all framed out and the supports are setup, i plan to purchase a butcher block type table top from Ikea seen here

Would love to hear everyones thoughts and suggestions.

That sounds like more or less how I did mine.

This is a quick sketch of what I did:

For the work surface i just bought pre laminated counter tops. The setup works very well for me, but one downside is if you are planning any really heavy fab work or really need to pound on things it isn't as solid as a free standing bench with 4 legs (at least it isn't in my garage with 2x4 walls, even with OSB in place of sheetrock)...

Oh, and welcome to GJ!

Prepare to empty out your wallet....

Mine's a 72"X 30" on six wheels, about 28" high, with a recently purchased Grizzly butcher block top.If the weather stays nice,I'll be able to secure the top to the bench via brackets.

Wow just looked up those grizzly butcher block tops and they expensive! I think i would have to lay cardboard down on my worktop so i didn't mess it up.

For the top of my bench I did some 12gauge mild steel over 3/4 inch OSB. The local steel shop charged me $100 for the steel and to put it in a break so it covers the corners. I absolutely love it. You can see it in my profile pic. It isn't painted I just rub it down with a couple drops of hydraulic fluid every couple months and that keeps it from rusting.

Just accept the idea it'll get some scuffs. Mine definitely has some scratches and dings. Dirt/grease/etc comes off easy with a spray of WD40 and a wipe though, and looks pretty good afterwards.
