Help with garage opener + light

I tried searching without success because I don't know if this already exists and if so how it is called.

My garage will be very dark at daytime, at night will be like a cave.

I want to light up a section of garage lights when the garage door opener works, the catch is:

#1 When arriving I want the lights to stay on till manually switching them off. ( So I can take my time instead of racing the light timer )

#2 When departing the lights will be on before activating the garage door so I want they to shut off on timer.

Just a small portion of what I want but those are the main 2.

Any ideas?

There are switches that can be operated with a wireless remote. Are your garage lights currently divided on 2 switches?

By no means the simplest or most efficient way to "only" solve this problem, and therefore probably not worth it if this is your only reason to install an Insteon system; but if you already have such a system, or can justify installing one for other reasons, it would be pretty simple to implement some "IF-THEN-ELSE" logic in the central controller, which would take its triggering cues off both the relay output from the GDO and a conveniently located keypad, or a wireless remote, or your smartphone for that matter. A count-down/delay timer is also trivially easy. For a (very) few specific hardware examples, see:

Obviously, this one task would not even scratch the surface of the many different possible applications for the Insteon system; but to go much further into that would takes us rather off-topic.

Not quite exactly what you describe, but I have a few if my lights in a separate circuit, hooked up to Motion sensor.

The garage doors open or I walk into the garage and those lights come on and stay on until I leave. If I'm out there for an extended duration, I just walk over and flip the switch to "on". Then when I go in the house I flip it back to "auto". Then when I come out, the lights come on and stay on until I leave in the car. I don't even have lights attached to the opener.

Might work?

I was looking at light timers for the architectural lightning and some electric shades so I guess it makes sense to invest a bit extra to automate more of the house.

Thanks!

That is a nice way too

I will talk to a "smarthome" rep and look for prices, if the thing doesn't go ridiculous I will do it that way.

Thanks !

I was struggling with that same issue after I replaced my garage door opener. The old one had a light on it that would come on when I opened the garage door, and stay on for about 5-10 minutes. New opener doesn't have a built-in light.

So I installed a sensor/timer light switch. When it detects the garage door opening it turns on the garage lights. Can set the timer for pretty much any interval.
Also works for when I walk into the garage, the lights turn on.

Worked mint in my situation.

On my garage I hooked up the outside lights with a remote control unit which actually came in the same box the Chamberlain garage door opener came in. So now when I get home after dark I can hit one button on the garage door opener remote and it turns on the outside lights. I have a spare remote in the house that I can turn the lights off when I get inside. If I leave the house and it is dark outside, I can turn on the outside garage lights from inside the house and turn them off from the remote control in the car as I am leaving. Works out really well and the cost was essentially free because the remote control light system came with the garage door opener. I am sure the cost of the remote control system for the lights was reflected in the cost of the garage door opener, but the point is, I was going to buy the garage door opener regardless so the fact that the remote control lights came with it was just a welcome plus.

Lowes & Home Depot sell a $15 motion detector light switch. It has a motion sensor and a timer...I think it can be set to 2, 4, and 15 minutes. If it senses motion, it will extend how long it's on.

I installed one of these in my wife's closet so she doesn't have to do anything, but open the door to see.

my garage door opener came with a motion sensor in the main button (the one you put by the man door leading to the house). Even if I am 'still' for too long and it shuts off, I just have to move again and it turns back on. As you walk out of the house, into the garage, it senses your movement and turns on.

The Garage door opener also came with a remote switch (like above), that can be operated with another button on the garage door remote in the car. I am sure it is meant to turn on a lamp in the house, so you don't have to walk into a dark house.

I believe it was a Chamberlain, from Home Depot. It had all those options standard.
