Hey guys. Long time no posts; even longer story. So......

Going through my tool box and run across these hand planes that belonged to my granddad.

A Craftsman and a Wards Master. I forgot that I had them. I remember sharpening them both and using them a very long time ago.

I can't seem to dig up any internet info on them other than they seem to be selling in the flea bay for around $20 a price.

Can anyone help with possibly who made them for their respective trademarks and what year(s) they were manufactured.

Thanks for any help. JP

Could be Stanley, Sargent, Millers Falls, or other. Looks like a 5c and maybe a 4.
Ok. Thanks for the info. Would you know where I can find possible year made?

I did run across a web site (name escapes me right now) after posting them up here that show a chart of Stanley, Craftsman and Miller model number comparison of hand planes made by Stanley but couldn't find any rate information.

If I remember right, at least some of the Craftsman were made by Sargent. Dig around some woodworking sites like Lumberjocks.com for more info.

There are many references for dating Stanley planes but I don't know about others. Mr Google should know. My guess is that they were made after WWII and before about 1970.

The model with the corrugated sole is for planing resinous timbers.

They’re not that common.

I’d be surprised if any decent corrugated plane sells for $20!

The idea was reducing the surface area of the sole to further reduce the friction of the plane on the surface being planed. Indeed it may do that, but it's still necessary to have a set of flat bottomed planes, as the corrugations damage corners and edges of wood when planing angles such as chamfers or form bullnoses such as box lids, window sills and stair treads. Many find corrugated soles grab shavings, especially super-thin ones that cling to the grooves of corrugated soles. Even flat soled planes do this. The problem inherent to corrugated soles is the grab and mush up in the grooves and on subsequent forward thrusts, damage the surface to be smoothed. None of the best plane craftsman I ever knew favored these planes. However, owning both, I really can't feel any friction reduction. I suppose if one were pushing planes all day long the senses might become more acute to any slight advantage.

And yes, those did cost a bit more than the flat sole planes.

Yep! Agree 100%

I was never convinced about the effectiveness of these, but just about every record plane made seemed to have the option of a corrugated sole - add a ‘c’ to the part number!

My Grandfather was a very serious woodworker but never found the need for a corrugated sole!

I guess my mileage varied. Most of my user planes are corrugated and I prefer them. Never had any of the issues you had. The shaving one is difficult for me to understand because all of my shavings come out of the top of the mouth. There are never any shavings on my planed surfaces to get stuck in corrugations. I guess our techniques are different. I know they are on chamfering--I skew my plane about 10 degrees so the blade slices. Using that technique, the chamfers are never exactly parallel to the planed corners.

But everyone has preferences. Personally I think the corrugations were mostly just marketing hype. But they do look cool to me anyway.

I appreciate all of the comments. Honestly, it's been so many years since I've used a plane, it would take me a few pieces of wood to get back up to speed, lol!

I remember sharpening those blades but can't remember ever using the corrugated bottom plane. My grandfather was a very practical fellow. More than likely, the plane was given to him by somebody he knew and he felt that he should keep it because if that.

Anyway, thanks for the info and the links. I'm in the process of moving to Ohio to be closer to my elderly parents and will be on and off for the next couple of weeks in the forum. Hoping to spend more time with my dad so I can pick is brain about wood and carpentry. Miss my grandfather; I know my dad misses him too.
