Try a used free standing pellet stove, they don't take up much space and burn clean unlike a woodstove smoking out your neighbors and having to store firewood. simple 110 plug in with side exhaust exit.

You have your answer. A hanging unit heater powered with propane. You'll need to oversize it to make up for the lack of insulation but these things are pretty cheap. Whole thing for 1000 bucks or so which won't even buy you a woodstove or pellet stove. The hanging unit heaters like hot dags, reznor, or modines are vented and ceiling mounted.

If you want to be really cheap, you can buy a torpedo (salamander) heater and set it on the floor. This thing will make lots of noise and with no exhaust pipe the fumes will build up in the shop but it is cheap and often can be found used.

Since you will be working on your race car and I suspect painting and fuel system work you should seriously consider a separated combustion unit heater. Beacon Morris makes a nice unit that can be setup either way by just buying there separated combustion vent kit. Most all other brands do not offer either option in the same unit and the cost difference is significant.
