I have had 4 hunter (wet rated) ceiling fans inside our patio for 10 or more years. Today I turned them on and one started slow and makes a bad bearing noise. Have any of you replaced the bearings in hunter fans the 150.00 type not the original.
If any of you have done this please school me how to do it.
The warranty says lifetime, but only includes labor for the first year.

I am willing to replace the bearings or do you think I should try to get hunter to replace the whole fan?

Thanks in advance

The last time I was hands on with Hunter fans, the motors were sealed bearings except for the "Original" Series fans.

If you have a sealed unit, you'd need to replace the entire motor. (Their warranty would cover the labor to have someone do this for you in the first year.) If you need a new motor, I would imagine that Hunter could assist you with getting one.

If you have the Original Series fans, then the bearings are not sealed? If you have this model, have you been lubricating the bearings regularly? If not, then you should be able to just re-oil the bearings and the noise will go away. (The Original Fans are very durable and I've been able to fix this issue on some neglected Originals before with just a little oil.)

Thanks Wssix
I am going to call them this morning and see what I need to do. I hope they will send a new motor as that would be the easiest thing for me to replace. It is not an original but is rated for damp usage so I think it must be the sealed unit.

I just didn't want to take it down and wait for a long time for parts to come.
I did find the instructions for all 4 last night and there was no maintenance required other than cleaning the blades and the outside of the fan..

Well This morning I called Hunter who told me that to even talk of warranty I needed the original receipt (which I don"t have)., So I thanked them and then called Sears (yes the same sears people have problems with) who looked up the account and found that I purchased it from them July 1, 2010. but she could not print a new receipt and suggested I go to the store and talk to the manager.
So I am off to Sears, Spoke to the store manager who said he could not print a new receipt, but could compose a letter to hunter stating when I purchased the fan.

Now armed with receipt I went to Austin Ceiling Fans and asked if this would do. They told me that they would not honor it because I didn't buy it there and to call hunter again. This time I had a name of a person to talk to, he asked me to fax the letter and he would get back to me after reviewing it.

Now I am waiting !!!!

Well here it is Sat and no word from Hunter, however I did talk to them Thurs and was told that they had to talk to the Manager from sears to prove he was really the manager. What a hassle to get the warranty for a simple thing as the motor from a ceiling fan.

I did take it down and the bearings are shot, so I thought replace the bearings and be done with Hunter. Can' get the motor apart so I am stuck.
Anyone been able to replace the Bearings in that kind of motor?

You can't get the bearings out without destroying the housing... and the motor.

Does Sears still sell the same fan? If so, maybe the manager would switch the motor out for you and return the bad one to Hunter through their vendor return process?

Befor you get too carried away I would try flushing out all the dirt and gunk in the bearings.
There should be two. One at each end.
Even if it is a so called "sealed" bearing.
I use starting ether, but most guys use carb cleaner.
You will need lots of paper towles and do it outside for safety's sake.
If they have 10 years of outside use they will be dirty, but fixable.
Then a drop or two of motor oil and you should be good fo another few years.

Yesterday I called Hunter and asked Andre what the status was on the warranty. Was told they were waiting to talk to the Sears manager and could not do anything until he was talked to.
So I decided to go to Sears and ask the manager if he minded calling Hunter and telling Andre who he was and that he had written the letter I sent hunter. He agreed and so we went to his office and he called after a very short conversation with hunter he hung up, said "that should take care of it".
Not convinced I thanked him and went to my car. Called hunter and spoke with Andre who said I would be getting a call from shipping to verify my address. Sure enough I received a call about 3 min later gave them my address and was told a replacement fan would be shipped in 3 to 14 days.

We will wait and see. but looks like my persistence will pay off.

Just waiting--- will update when it arrives

Good luck with Hunter. It seems that they want their customers to buy complete new fans rather than repair them. (More money in their pockets). I can't even get a simple capacitor from them. They won't sell the part. Nothing wrong with the fan other than it runs just on slow speed. I've tried other internet sites, but can't seem to find a capacitor with the same specs.

What size cap do you need? If I get to keep the old fan or even if i send it back the caps may be the same size. If so I will send it to you.

Today 11/15/12 the replacement fan came. It is the same except instead of being from Thailand is from (you guessed it) China.
everything looks the same but the color is really white. So I am going to reuse the old white parts (blades, fan motor cover, and misc hardware). IF the weather is warm tomorrow it gets put up. The hassel was probably worth the effort.

Thanks Hunter.

Now I am going to figure out how to replace the motor bearings incase one of the other fans does the same thing.

I remember when I worked in an automotive electrical shop back in the seventies. People would come in with heater motors that were making noise and we would replace them. They had sealed bushings and bearings in them, too. After we replaced them, I would dig them out of the trash and drill a small hole in the back (or front) of the housing. Then I would take an oil can and give it a small shot of oil through the hole. They would usually smooth right out and quiet down. Then I would buff the paint off of it around the hole, take my soldering gun and put a drop of solder over the hole to seal it back up. I still have several of them out in my garage today, because they didn't want them.

Gary,
You wouldn't happen to have an extra bushing and bushing pin?
My sisters fan came without a few parts. She called Hunter and they forgot to ship the busing & pin. Because it's a second order they are giving her the run around and will not ship the bushing,
I would appreciate any help you'd be willing to offer, thanks.

I wish I had an extra bushing, but my fan does not use anything that looks even remotely like that.

Sorry

Gary -- You may want to see IF this is the part you are looking for.

Found on Sears parts site:

Better yet do a Google search on the part number. There were over 400 hits. Many looked like good leads to find the needed part. Good luck!

Just found this site, it looks quite good. Hope I haven't hijacked someone else's thread.
I have a Hunter Ceiling fan circa 2002 Model 280027. The fan makes a fair amount of noise.
I called Hunter, they said to remove the blades and see if the noise still exists, I did and the noise is worse. Hunter said I needed the receipt and they would offer a deal on a new fan. As I just moved in, a receipt is out of the question. I followed the above advice, removed the fan, cleaned it and oiled the bearings. While it isn't perfect it is far quieter than before. The next time it needs oil, I'll get some 90 weight gear oil rather than the 30 I had lying around. If I lived on the mainland and had access to a good parts store, I would definitely try and replace the bearings.

Thanks,

Jim W
