I've never owned a mill (or even operated one) but ended up with an index model 40 so cheap I couldn't pass it up. From all of my reading it has a Brown & Sharpe #9 taper and I know I can have the spindle reground with an R8 taper but I'd rather figure out the tooling on mine for now. I know collets are still available from at the below link, but I'm not sure about they work with what I've got?

These pictures are what I have on my machine:

I don't see how the collets would work with this? The hole is 3/8 so there's no way I could put a 3/4" collet in there. Can someone point me in the right direction?

So what you have is an adapter that changes the B&S 9 to a DA (dual angle?) collet. I don't recognize the collet you show but there are many different ones out there, some obsolete. Remove the drawbar from the top and the adapter should come out. It depends whether you have the drawbar retaining nut on top of the spindle or not. If the nut is there the drawbar will force the adapter out. If not then loosen the drawbar a couple of turns and hit it with a soft hammer to unseat the taper then back out the drawbar to release the adapter.

What you have is something like this; http://www.penntoolco.com/171-3008/ That could be a straight or B&S 9 shank.

I have that same mill and had it reground to R8, the best thing I did. The savings on tooling paid for the job. You may also enjoy this thread, https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=273996 and there are a few more threads on the Index 40 on this forum if you search them out.

Thanks! I'll let you know what I figure out when I get back to my shop.

I priced having the spindle reground and its around $700 now, just having a hard time spending that when the mill was less than half of that!

But before you go and buy new #9 collets, make sure you can remove the current DA collet holder from the spindle. Otherwise leave it in place and.buy the DA collets that fit .

Congrats on the new machine! If you haven't found it yet, head over to hobby-machinist.com. Some really friendly and knowledgeable people over there.

That is a big price jump, I paid Wells-Index $280 some years back.
