my fiance is doing encaustic art and she wants these brushes that screw in to the tip of her hot knife / woodburner thing http://www.dickblick.com/items/01115-1406/ well if i can figure out what typ of metal they are i think i could make them for a lot less then 30 bucks apiece any idea wether they are brass or copper or do you thinki it would matter cause my plan is to get some solid copper or brass narrow the end and thread it then drill out the other end put in some wires then crunch them in the press then trim for tip shape

I think they may be some type of natural bristle, not brass or copper. The shell is probably brass tubing.

As a test, try trimming an acid brush to size. Then crimping a bolt of the right thread count into the shortened handle. The bristles could be trimmed to your liking.

Plug it in and see if it bursts into flames.

Brass, athough you could use copper. I have made a few prototypes. The threaded shank MIGHT be an 8-32 thread, depending on the tool it goes in.

thank you guys i picked up some solid copper #4 gauge wire biggest i could find unfortunately. going to make them at work on monday and try them
