Help with mounting a vise on a small workbench

I have had this vise for a while now, and have a couple projects that I need to use it, and need to mount it.

When I built my workbench, I didn't really build it with a vise in mind, especially a larger one. It's 2x4's with a double 3/4" ply top, with a 1/4" hard board sacrificial top. The back is 3/4" ply, and the sides and shelf are thin plywood. It's all glued and screwed, but the frame was built mostly with pocket hole screws. As seen, I haven't used it a ton yet. The bench is pretty small, at roughly 24"x48". It's in a small 3 car garage, so there's not a lot of room for a large bench. It's pretty sturdy for what it's meant for, but not a heavy bench to beat on.

The vise is a Rock Island #51, and was a gift. It's fairly beat (lots of dings and the tail is cracked I think), and probably large for the work bench, but it's better than the new cheapies and works just fine. I looked at maybe getting a cheap small one, but they weren't anywhere as smooth as this one, and really seemed like a waste of money. I'd still probably have issues mounting one of those.

In the picture, it's sitting about where I think I can mount it. The static jaw is over the work bench, which is not ideal. If I mount it in an ideal location I would have to run the bolts through the 2x4 beams (hidden behind the front piece in the picture). I am not real fond of that idea, and I am pretty sure the 6" bolts I bought to do that are too short.

Is mounting it this way going to be a problem, or will I regret it? It almost seems like it's going to be in the way on the bench, but other than that, not mounting the static jaw over the edge, am I going to end up cursing that? Mostly at this point it's going to be used for things like sharpening lawn mower blades, gunsmithing, and working on a truck rebuild/restore. I thought about building a wood stand for it, but don't really want another thing to work around in the garage.

I really need to get this thing mounted up so I can put together my dad's Christmas present. I just finally got all the little stuff I needed, as some of the parts unexpectedly didn't come with. :shocking:

Why not mount the vice to either a thick piece of wood, or a piece of metal, so when needed, you'd clamp it down, and stow it beneath the bench, to free up space?

Not a bad idea, and I was thinking about this. That wood in the background was left from the previous owner, and there is I think a 2x12 in there that would probably be fine for this.

I am not sure I have C-clamps big enough, but I do have some woodworking clamps that are plenty sizeable.

ETA: If I mounted it on a piece of board, I guess I could even just bolt the board to the bench and remove it when I didn't need it... then I could get the vise mounted "right".

Since you have a small work bench, the idea to mount it on a piece of wood to be used when needed and stored when not needed is a good one.
You have a very interesting vise. From the picture, it looks like it has a pivot jaw. I also noticed that the slide was cracked. If I had that vise, in would braze the crack and restore it to its former glory. Can you post more detailed pictures of it?

It is a pivot jaw, and it's certainly an interesting vise, and I would like to restore it. I will get some more pictures tonight and post them, I need to get off the computer and get a few things done around the house, including get the vise mounted!

I don't know why I didn't think the board thing through better, I think that will work out well.

Not sure what you're using it for, but I mounted mine in a similar location on my bench that is similar to yours. I just used 3/8" lag bolts into the 2x4s below (for 3 of the holes, one is just into the plywood). This isn't it's forever home, and I won't be doing any heavy work with it, so it'll do fine for now.

Looks like a swivel base so I'd mount it on the opposite corner so it will work along the side too. I'd drill right through everything and use as long a bolts as needed to go through. A vise is used often enough it's nice to have it on the ready instead of being faced with the little mini job of retrieving it and clamping it down every time you need to file, saw or beat on something.

I had a bench like yours, 2x4's laminated together on end with ply top. I drilled right through and used long bolts to mount the 6" record vice. I remember tightening something in it so hard I bent the handle of the vice but the vice and the bench took it without a quiver.
