Awesome forum guys! I've been lurking for awhile and I figured it's about time I ask some questions.

I've been looking at air compressors for awhile now, but with a $200 max budget I wasn't finding much to get excited about. I almost decided to go against my better judgement and get a Harbor Freight compressor and hope it lasted until I could afford something better. But, I came across this gem (I hope) on craigslist yesterday and picked it up for $100.

It seems to run ok, but it needs some work in order to be used... and I'm not 100% sure what exactly it needs. As far as I can tell, it needs a pressure switch and a regulator? Basically I would like to know how it is supposed to look and what is supposed to be there, but I'm not having any luck finding any pictures that aren't thumbnail size?

Yea thats a pretty good buy. Pretty sure thats a Dayton pump (still a good pump.) What you need to do if find the pressure rating. If you can't find it, a good way to tell what it is is looking at what the pressure relief valve on the tank is set for.

Yea pretty much. The valve has the pressure stamped on it. Its important because even if the pump is rated for 125 psi, if it was setup to run 40 psi, Champion might have put a bigger driving pulley on it.

What valve is set & 135 psi? That compressor is made for 125 PSI max. Do not exceed the max pressure rating of the receiver. It looks like you need a pressure switch and a gauge as well as a outlet with a service valve.

I thought that was a little wierd... though I don't know if the pump I posted is what I have because I can't find any other number other than the serial number.

So is it better to get a safety valve that is under the max pump psi? If so how much? Or is this the appropriate valve (assuming my pump is 125 max psi)?

What specs do I need to look for as far as a pressure switch? If 125 is the max psi, at what pressure should the pressure switch turn on and off? Would this work?

How about regulators and/or filters?

The tank's safety relief valve.

The tank safety relief valve will be a little more than the cut out pressure on your pressure switch. I believe most 175# unit are set to 200#.

Your pressure switch should be have a manual on/off switch and an unloader valve to release the air between the in tank check valve and the head.

Filters and regulators are your preference.
