Hello...I’m new here, just joined today and posted a brief note in the intro forum.
We are finally (after one very long delay, and one short one, due to outrageous weather!) starting a fairly big renovation project. We will be adding a front porch and building a loft above our attached two car garage. The loft will be accessed though an abutting second floor bedroom, currently a sewing room. End result will be a big sewing room with the existing bedroom plus the new space above the garage.
At the end of the project we will be finally (we’ve been in this house 35 years!) organizing the garage. We have a quote from Garage Living. The current plan is for slat wall on three walls, wall hung cupboards/work area on half of the back wall, and a nice finish on the floor. We do not have a garden shed, so need room for more than an average number of rakes, shovels, etc., plus garbage and recycle bins (really lots of these), quite a few ladders of various sizes, lawn mower, maybe a snow blower...winter tires, etc.
We have a lot of cars for only two drivers...including two summer cars, a Miata and a Mustang. We had hoped to have a lift installed so we could keep both cars (both convertibles) on the one side, but it looks like we are a few inches short to make it fit.
I’m going ahead with the side mounted openers in the hopes that we find a lift that will work or that someone invents one that requires less wiggle room. We have the height for the lift itself and the two cars, what we lack is the 5” or so that the lift has to rise up before it can go down. If anyone has a suggestion we’d be very happy to hear it.
My main question is, does it make sense to put slat wall on both side walls of the garage? I’m not crazy about the idea of hanging rakes etc. so close to the cars where one false move could find a wayward tool crashing into one of the cars. And will we really need that much space to hang and organize these tools? Plain drywall is a lot cheaper than slat wall.
I live in hope that my CRV will find room in the garage in the winter, which would mean tools hanging next to a car too...as I’m sure there is no way everything would fit on the half of the back wall that would remain once the cabinets are installed.
