Help with post vise

Lots of ideas on the interenet- fixed and mobile. Google 'Pinterest post vise stand'. Get the height right when you build the stand so the post vise stands plumb and the mounting plate is level at a height where the wedge works and the spring pushes. Looks like it needs some grease on the screw and probably oil on the pivot.

Fix it with the plate bolted through your bench, or a strong rigid stand of some kind. The bottom of the vice leg needs to go in a hole in the floor, or a block, or have a huge staple to fix it to the bench leg. Lubricate the screw thread well and the casting at the back with the female part of the thread will just sit on there and float in to it's own comfortable position..
The great advantage of a leg vice is that you can hammer things held in the jaws, it's incredibly strong, and the thread doesn't get damaged. Disadvantage is the jaws don't close parallel but you can clamp so hard it's not a problem! Lots of pics on the internet and a few good ones on GJ.

It's a pleasure, and lots of folk on GJ will be very helpful. That fancy iron stand is someone else's, I think the base and the feet are cast iron.
That stand posted by cretedog looks pretty good and very practical. I like the floor mount for the end of the leg.
Mine is mounted to a wooden bench same as in the top picture. I'm a great lover of vices like these, the *********** allows holding odd shaped workpieces.
Whatever you do with your's please post up pictures and progress, and it would be best to put it on the 'blacksmith vice thread' link here:

Hey Bill, the only thing I see missing is the wedge that holds the "U" collar to the table mount fixture. The wedge is made in 2 parts that fit together to fill the wide slot where the U collar and table mount fixture join together. You only have 1 half of the wedge. You seem to be missing the 2nd half which when fitted along side of the 1st half will completely fill the slot and rigidly connect the U collar to the table mount fixture.
Together the 2 halves of this wedge form a parallel and you have the complicated half that has the retaining bumps on one side. That one has to go in first and then the 2nd half goes in and you tap it until it snugs up and locks. It will be easy to make the one you are missing but remember the outside dimensions (between the bumps) must be parallel so the edge that the 2 halves slide against each other are the tapered side of each half wedge. At least that's how mine is made.
