First off, I gotta admit I'm a welder by trade and working with wood is a little different., 2X4's aren't 2"x4" so things never seem to work out perfect.

Problem today is I'm trying to visualize how the new screen door and brick molding will attach to the door frame/jambs.

I purchased a 36" steel (in swing) entry door and have it framed in.
I have yet to purchase a suitable screen door (aluminum) but I do have the brick molding.

The question is,
How does the outside screen door fit to the brick moulding and how far apart do I space each upright piece? ??

The screen door should be 36" (right?) so do I space the brick mold 36" in-between the uprights or is there a magic number/dimension for 36" doors/jams and then the screen attaches to the face of the brick mold?

I would like to seal the door frame/jamb from the weather with the brick mold today and worry about the screen door in the spring.

Thanks in advance

moe, the not to handy carpenter.

The screen door mounts to the flat of the brickmould. The dimension of the brickmould spacing will be the same as the width of the sill. If you look down at the sill you will see that it's not as wide as the jamb. The inside face of the brickmould hits up against the sides of the sill and obviously you hold that dimension all the way up to the head casing brickmould. Some door manufacturers actually put a score lline on the face of the jamb as an alignment aid for the brickmould.

Three is usually 3/8 to 1/2 inch of reveal at the jamb. I would space it to make the screen door fit well if it is close.

A 36" storm door is not going to require exactly 36" between the brick mould. There is quite a bit of play there actually. As stated earlier, put a reveal in the brick mould when you fasten it to the jamb and everything will mount up just fine.

Thanks guys, I think I have it figured now.
There's a first time for everything and this is my first time in rebuilding the front door/entry & windows.

The old rotted front face of the building was a just a bunch of thrown together lumber as the fella that built this 'barn' was less of a carpenter than I hope to be some day.

Thanks again for the comments, it's put me on the right track.
