@Pattenp- Yeah really, considering the fact the OP was already having a hard time keeping track off all the different options he could go with!

I thought so. I know you know what you're doing from all your posts and just thought it was a typo. Others on here may misread that and think they can put regular romex in conduit though!

We should also steer away from using "Romex" as a wire type because it's a brand of NM.

I hope I don't regret this, but if you run conduit from house panel to jbox in barn and use individual THHN/THWN wires, you could use #8 aluminum and save some $$$. Aluminum is about a third of the cost of copper. You can use 2 #8 and 1 #10 and you could get by with 3/4 PVC conduit.

Good point! Agreed!

I am Confident in my ability to execute but like to talk out loud if I'm not 100% sure on the plan. Sorry if I have talked this to death!!

I ended up running a 30 amp 240v circuit in the garage for the compressor. I couldn't figure out a way to run the air line underground without a big *** trench and a bunch of filters and dryers. This is for storage, so I just need some lights and a couple of receptacles.

Results are in, 120.8 volts at outlet with only a ~20 watt CFL and timer for a chicken coop. Dips to 113 with 900 watts, 110 with 1200 worth of heater. All this on 55 feet of 14 gauge.

However an additional 26 watts of CFL (my shed light setup) results in a mere 0.1 volt drop. ;)

Good bad or ugly (probably the latter two) there are your numbers. :D

Thank you for taking the time to do that. I appreciate it. Hopefully the 10ga will be more than enough to compensate!

No, u didn't talk it to death. This stuff can get complicated with all the possible variables! We've given u a # of options! Now you've gotta pick ur poison! :D

Believe it or not, there's actually a formula for calculating voltage drop. So u don't have to test a particular wire with a load to figure out what the VD will be!

Don't worry about that. The beauty of a forum is that others can learn. I know I learned a few things in this thread that will be helpful to me.

Ok. Guys, my neighbor and I are renting a trencher on Friday. It runs 63 bucks for 3 hours. 12" deep and 2.5 inches wide. Perfect. I ordered 125 ft of 10-2 UF at .85/ft. Fortunately he is trenching too so we can split the cost. Anyway, I'm going to stick it in 1" PVC just for an extra measure of cheap insurance. Attached is a crude diagram of the inside. Other than the drawing skills any flaws with the plan? Thanks!ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349315953.060793.jpg

I am using a 20 a breaker so I planned to use 12ga THHN in conduit within the building. I will also be using a single pole switch At the entry point to serve as the disconnect. Is that an ok plan?

I guess too late, but I'd go with the 240v option. Nothing says you have to use it, but next year when you want to run the compressor or mig out there, you'll be glad you did.

Yeah, all's okay. I know you said 20A in your first post, so my question was a test question.

Yeah it's too late. This is just a storage shed. The mig and compressor are in the garage. Technically I could run my 110 mig and compressor out there. Pattenp, thanks for keeping me honest,
