Having an issue with one of the old SK ratchets my Dad had from many years ago. It will loosen fine but when you switch it to tighten it just free wheels.
I would like to get a repair kit for it to keep using it so does anyone know if there is any kits that will work for older ratchets or doesn't it matter?
Any assistance with this is appreciated.

Try soaking the Head in some ****** fluid, Or remove the Ratchet Mechanism and give it a good cleaning/lube.

if you can't fix the ratchet head the parts are still the same as they have been for over fifty years so you can keep your ratchet

The rebuild kits replace basically everything except the head casting, which doesn't sound like it's your problem. In that case, I think you should locate a rebuild kit and give that a try. Amazon has them, although not cheap. There's also the eBay route, but again, prices don't seem very competitive there.

One of the GJ members, alex71, has a ton of SK ratchet repair kits at very good prices. I've bought multiple items from him and many others on this forum have as well, all with good results to my knowledge. The kit you are looking for is either a 42470-2 or 42470-9 and I think Alex still has the latter for sale.

You can find his thread here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83409

Hope that helps, these are great ratchets and worth fixing up and keeping.

I have the same ratchet. Just call SK and they will send you a rebuild kit for free. I just recently called them and had my new kit in only 4 days. The lady on the phone was super nice and helpful. I can't say enough good things about their customer service. Give them a call and good luck.

I followed 70redbee post and just got off the phone with customer support and spoke with Lauren and she said the kit was in stock and will be shipping it today so hopefully by next week. So with all the input from some of the members I'll have the ratchet preforming as it should soon.
Thanks again for all the help.

I have a 1/2" ratchet from SK, emailed them a few days ago asking for a rebuild kit, what it would cost, and they said they'd ship it free, no problem. Mine is an older model too-- 40270, I think? Can't recall, and I sure can't complain!

SK customer service was on the ball as the repair kit arrived today via UPS. Instead of messing with the original mechanism I installed the replacement one and it works like it should. I threw the original one in the tool box to mess with it later and see if the soak works. So another older tool of my Dad's is back in service and He'll be there in spirit with me each time it's used.

Thanks again for all the suggestions I really appreciate it. :)

He-he, in some parts of New York City that might get a laugh and /or a "Yuck!". :)
Just having fun.

I'm glad it worked out for you. As I said, SK was great with me and got my rebuild kit out to me very fast. You can't beat that kind of service and with a smile. I look forward to buying more SK. Oh and by the way, make sure you keep all the old parts...you never know when you or someone else may need a part.

I had a similar problem with the same ratchet except mine was stripped in the ccw direction. I opened it up and the three teeth on the pawl were stripped. The previous owner had put so much force on the handle as to create a permanent bow of about 1/4" before the teeth finally gave way. Lauren put a free rebuild kit in the mail for me too. I offered to pay, saying the failure was the result of abuse, but she insisted. Nice to see that they have some continuity in the customer service dept with the same Lauren doing the same fantastic job.

Or when you'll need one when you lose a part next time you take the ratchet apart :lol_hitti

One of the members here suggested a while ago to take apart ratchets inside a clear plastic bag to make sure no parts escape - this really works. Also works for other disassembly tasks that have springs, clips, and other easily lost parts that can fly apart. Hope that helps.
