Help with some lathe work

Not sure if this should be here or in Free Parking, but I'll post here first.

I'm wondering if anyone out there with a lathe and an hour or two be interested in helping me out.

I've got a tunnel ram on the 454 in my boat. I need two new pieces made for the throttle linkage. Very simple pieces, I just don't have a lathe to machine them.

I will post pics shortly when I get home. I have stock I can send to make them from and I will pay for time/materials needed. I'm not looking for a hand out, just a hand.

Thanks

Pics. I can do the drilling/threading, just need the overall diameters turned/parted.b9f8e08208ebad35e5d841ebd813834e.jpgce65c1f7162838877fe86fde3c8b3cfc.jpg013bdb256bacb143cd30b53eede250e3.jpg7ecc182baab83e92bf6e6a997996b7c3.jpgef564f3310d9ab558c4aa817af2f3e9d.jpg

Might be able to help. Can these be mailed in one of the USPS boxes?

EDIT: Looks like it.

What about the threads and looks like maybe a circlip groove?

I should be able to knock those out, how quickly do you need them?
Heading out for the day, but I'll check in a little later if possible, otherwise in the am.

Easily made without a lathe or drill press for that matter. Drill the 1/2" dia. stock and silver solder in that stud (bolt). Assuming those are standard threads, file off the stud threads not needed. A hand drill will do it all, a DP will make it easier.

A groove if needed, can be done with a hacksaw, drill running.

Material type? Something relatively machinable (plain steel or non-hardened stainless) or something not readily machinable (carbide or something else really hard or hard to machine)?

Rough tolerances?

Fillet radius where the 3/16" dia section joins the 1/2" dia section?

You -might- be able to take a piece of 3/16" round bar (.1875" dia) and do a shrink fit into a 3/16" hole drilled in your 1/2" dia main piece. Just a possible option.

And those threads on the 3/16" section look 'funky'.

Sent you a PM. Agree the threads on the 3/16th portion don't look standard but may just be damaged.

Where you call out .18" dia is that going to be threaded? It would be better to call out for tap drill size or thread size on the male part. .18" is not close enough for good threads or a hole to be tapped 3/16.

Where in the world are you located? Someone might be just down the road. I can also do the job.

All threads are 1/4-20. From what I found a 0.1887" rod will thread to 1/4-20. So maybe that dim. should be .19 instead of .18.

I had thought about a stud welded/threaded on, but this will be the main link between the two carbs and I felt that a single piece would be stronger. The old pieces were a single piece and worked great until I boogered the threads all to hell.

I overtorqued the nut slightly and after that it was a nightmare to get the piece off of the carb without messing up the carb, that's why the threads look so bad. A stripped nylock nut is hard to remove in tight quarters.

The shaft between the carbs is inserted into the larger through hole and cinched with a 1/4-20 set screw then I have bushings that fit the stud side and a nut sandwiches all of this around the large hole on a standard Holley throttle arm. I wish I had a better pic to illustrate the mounting.

Thank you all for the replys and offers, I think BuffetFan is going to help me out.

Again, I really appreciate it!

I would make that part from 303 stainless or brass since it's in a boat. That looks like a nice boat don't want rusty parts. The part you dimension at .188 needs to be closer to .250 for a 1/4-20 thread and the shoulder length may or may not matter depending on the way it attaches to the carb. From personal experience I would make the area where the setscrew clamps the linkage somewhat thicker since they often strip out.
Have you looked for the parts at Summit or Jegs?

My HS shop teacher would beat me. I guess I've been looking at the minor diameter instead of the major. You'd think as much as I work on old iron repairing threads/studs I'd have caught that.

I can get a kit with these pieces in it, but the cost is a little high for my liking. I've got all the other parts, just goobered up these pieces. I figured I could fork out a little coin for two new pieces instead of the whole kit and then have extra parts left over.

So, I don't mean to mess up the direction this is going, but if you use a loctited setscrew for your external threads it a) saves time over single pointing which can require a live center for support and b) you get perfect rolled threads instead of certain materials that like to tear at the crests. The rolled threads are stronger than the cut threads on any day of the week. If you don't like the internal hex it can be carefully parted, belt sanded or zipped off with a dremel and then face the end back to proper length and Higby the lead thread for self-cleaning.

On that part there isn't a lot of "meat" for the setscrew to grip but its just a thought that relates to those type of parts.

That looks like a standard linkage pivot bushing.
Why don’t you just buy one.
Mr. Gasket 1512 Carburetor Bushing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000932O70/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Well I'll be damned, all I could find from the speed parts catalogs were kits that were overpriced IMO. That's good info to have in the future, however I hope to not need it.

While those are Mr. Gasket's, I'll have Mr. BuffetFan's stainless bushings installed this weekend. :D These things look great from the pics, can't wait to get them and set them up on the tunnel ram. They should outlast the boat.

Thanks to everyone for the info and offers, this board is great!

Figured I'd update this thread. I've been thrashing on a new wiring harness for the boat, along with shining up everything I can get my hands on. The boat is a bare hull as we speak. Got a couple pics and one special one for BuffetFan. b223828adaa72d552b72189544498bc5.jpgd208afe0fe9806b8296ae8e3b2764935.jpg14a1bc44b2025819adac97968cc69ef9.jpg
