Hello all, I have a Stanley 286 bench grinder that I'm cleaning up and was hoping someone here could share a little information on it. The grinder was given to me by my father, who picked it up on craigslist not really knowing much about it. It looks pretty clean, so my initial plan was to just check the wheels, replace the power cord, then use it as is, so of course that turned into a complete tear-down.
The wiring was a mess and it looks like somebody had a go at redoing it with whatever random bits they had lying around. Some of the wires were just twisted together then wrapped with electrical tape! The starting capacitor is also missing. I found an old Stanley catalog that calls it a capacitor start, induction run motor so I’m assuming there should be one. Does anyone know what the original cap value was on the 286 (or 586, or any of the Kingston-Conley 1/3 hp grinders that appear to be the same)? I found an old thread about Stanley grinders that mentioned a couple possible values, but it didn’t say which model/size they were for. It actually seems to start fine the way it was wired, but if there really is supposed to be a series cap I can’t imagine that it’s good for the starting winding.
Unfortunately, it also looks like this thing was dropped at some point. The right shield is cracked and the arbor is slightly bent, so the wheel went in the trash and I’ll be replacing the bearing. If I can’t straighten the arbor it can at least spin a buffing wheel. The only other odd thing I noticed was the set screws on the end caps just barely touch the bearings. Are the screws just a stop, or was there something else that they’re supposed to hold in place?
