Help with thermostat wiring

Hi all,

We recently got a wifi thermostat for the house and I was going to move the old 7 day programmable to the garage. The programmable thermostat has separate terminals for RH and RC, but the old thermostat in the garage has only an R terminal and only one wire.

It looks to me like I should just put a jumper between the RC and RH, is that correct?

yep, you could just hook it up RH.

you would only use the RC if you had AC and it had its own transformer, not very common today

Correct, it normally won't matter on a garage furnace unless you have the ability to run the fan separately or have A/C.

That is correct. If your shop only has heat, just go to the RH terminal and don't worry about the jumper.

RH and RC are used for systems where there are different 24v sources for the heating and cooling cycles.

I should have been more specific, this thermostat is for the finished "office" space in my garage, which has a heat pump (AC).

So in that case the jumper is required, correct?

yes, if the old thermostat had the jumper.......how was the old thermostat hooked up? did it have the jumper? or a seperate wires running from RH and RC?

oops just re read your original post and it only had the R terminal

just put the jumper on there and you should be fine

The current thermostat only has one "R" terminal, no separate RH and RC

now you have a few wires in there that I have not seen before.

what do you have for heat?, i know you have a heat pump but do you also have some backup heat like a resistance coil? that maybe w2, i'm not sure what the orange is for, it could be your RC.........C looks like common/ground, i'm not sure what E is for

you don't happen to have a schematic?

look inside your furnace and see if you a wiring diagram on the back of the door

Orange is for the reversing valve.
W2 would normally be a second stage of heat, could be heat strips or gas/oil.
E is probably emergency heat, full backup heat with no heat pump compressor.

We don't have very many heat pumps around here and even fewer have electric backup.

i wonder if he has all those terminals on that programable stat? if he's got a run of the mill programable stat he probably doesn't
looks like a old stat, do you think he has a one transformer system?

Def single transformer so jumper would be needed.

I'm guessing the house has a heatpump as well so he might be fine.
