This is my currant box.

Every drawer is completly packed with tools.

As I add tools it's getting harder to find them. I don't have room for my wrenches in just 1 drawer so they are spread out in 3 drawers. My screwdrivers ,nut drivers and torx drivers are 4 deep and a real pain to find.

My main problem is the lengtn of my drawers from front to rear. The biggest ones are only 15 inches deep.

The KRL boxes I see are close to 30 inches deep!

Been looking at the KRL7022 and possibly the KRL7023. My question is: How do I know if I can fit all my tools in one of the KRL boxes? I want to lose the top boxes and use the top of the new box as a work table.

I don't want to buy a box only to find out that it's still too small.

Help!

the good news is, that HF bottom and side box do not hold as much stuff as many other 42" boxes- most of the drawers, I believe are only 2" in height. I would calculate how much square footage you are using right now, and compare it to say, a 56" or 72" x 30" deep bottom box. I think you will find that your existing tools only fill one of those maybe near half way. You do have to allow for future expansion. Also, the other consideration is, what type of drawer height do you prefer for you tools- 2", 3", etc. You are right- you do not want to buy too small of a box.

How do I got about calculating square footage? Unfortunatly I'm mathematically stupid.

I'm thinking that tall drawers would waste a lot of space?

square footage is length x width. Make sure that the measurement is in feet. So 2ft 6in would be 2.5 ft. You could start there with the sq footage of your old box and estimate how much more you would need. cubic feet is the same but with a height component. length x width x height

You just do width x depth of each drawer (depth being front to back, not top to bottom). That gives you square inches. You'll also want to figure out the height of the drawers to make sure what you want will fit in them.

That front to back depth can make a huge difference. That's the big one with me right now looking at a new box.

I went from a 40" combo with full locker that speced at 25000 cubic in to 1022 that specs around 33000. What you have there will easily go into a krl.

From what I calculated, the HF has 3895 sq inches and 11528 cu inches. My KR1000 (probably comparable storage as a 2 bank KRL) has 9687 sq inches and 34158 cu inches. So yea, WAY bigger. Hope that helps.

I have 2 USG 42" boxes, 1 side drawers, 2 lockers, and 1 top cabinet. While not every single drawer is packed, I can't fit a lot of items due to the small drawers. I'm moving into a KRL1023 with a side locker and a docker locker. I figured I'd have at least 10k cubic inches extra space, and with the deeper drawers, I could utilize my storage better.

I have zero complaints on the USG cabinet's quality, but the 15" deep drawers are a major obstacle.

Just remember that just because a box is bigger it doesn't necessarily hold more tools. Depending on the types of tools, a smaller base box with many narrow drawers can hold more than a larger box with larger deeper drawers. Choose wisely.

just my $0.02

if you have quite a few blow molded boxes in the drawers,
add a locker, it frees up drawer space.

imho
HF (and others) have some great "starter" & "homeowner" boxes, the biggest drawback is the overall depth (front to back) of the drawers, really cuts down on available space when you have tons of sockets and wrenches you want to keep together.
