I'd offer $100, maybe a little more cause there is that one snap on ratchet but not alot more.

Given their asking price and their date ranges they claim to be there they obviously are delousional about what they have and probably arent going to sell them.

Mix and match tool sets don't command top dollar.

It's very hard to see condition in those pictures. Assuming for a moment that you needed them or wanted a set like that strongly, expect to pay 75-150. Be prepared that the seller is probably asking like 250 or something because he rightly places a higher value on the tools because they were his grandfathers. Ignore whatever sob story there is and remain objective.

A pawn shop that is into tools would probably offer 40 for the lot.

I wouldn't go above $ 60.00 for the whole shebang...

He's selling his "Grandfather's" tools...If I had any, I wouldn't sell them, I'd give them to one of my grandsons...

That doesn't even look like a SO ratchet to me, more like a cheap SO lookalike.

I'd probably say $100. If you split it up and sold it on ebay, you would probably get more...but still a far cry from $450!

I would offer $75. But it sounds like the guy thinks he is sitting on a goldmine of "vintage" tools and he has priced them accordingly.

Offer him a dollar and see what kind of counter-offer he gives. It pisses me off when people treat Craigslist like it's E-bay. If he wants offers, he should sell his stuff on an auction site. $450 is just stupid. I usually flag those "make me an offer" ads.

Check to see how much of it is Snap-on. I wouldn't give more than a dollar a piece for the non-Snap-on.

Those tools would be way more useful if they were kept in the dude's family and given to a son or nephew or something and used to actually repair things. Shame to sell your grandfather's tools. The dude's greedy and thinks they are worth $450. I see $100 tops because they lack the sentimental value to us.

Sounds like you did it right. Sure he's just hoping some collector/sucker comes along and offers him more than you. With the price in his ad, probably scaring away more buyers than he knows.

I know I wouldn't have bothered even taking a look with $450 in the CL ad.

Only reason I bothered it was right on my way into town.Had to make the trip so I figured what the hell. Maybe I would get lucky.
You are right, NO one will drive very far with a price like he has listed.
I told him that.
To top it off when I got there to look at them, some that were pictured in the ad were not on the table. He even admitted he did not Know where they went.

I can not understand how people expect to sell when they do stuff like this.

Thats when I switch tacks, and see if there is some useful set that he doesn't think is worth the farm, but most of its SAE, and SAE is getting more and more common for sale cheap, even name brands like Proto etc.

Oh yeah I forgot,
One of the so called Deep sockets was an axle peg off of a BMX Bike.

That says it all right there. The seller doesn't know what they have or tools in general and is too lazy to do the research on realistic value so they error on the side of caution for them and put a high price on it. I highly doubt he will take your $50 offer. Just for the sole reason that you slighted his ego. See it all the time. People have their wallet and emotions tied.
